The first 996 Turbo I test drove was a tip.

I thought it was a little crazy in automatic mode. I pinned the accelerator and got a down shift into 1st and quick shift into second. It was a little unnerving. I was only expecting second gear. This little maneuver made the salesman a little nervous to say the least.

I was impressed with the transmission overall, but found it lacking in driver involvement even in manual mode (given).

I have no regrets buying a 6 speed, but only use the car in low-traffic times and places. I'm also a good 35 years away from 60 years old. If you think you'd enjoy a tip more, go for it.

 

What is the price of a very good clutch for a 6 speed?

 

I'm willing to bet that many of these pro/con arguments are age related.

 

I believe it is more ego related. That's why one side always won because that side couldn't let it go.

 

Where did you get this idea? Top 11, only one a tip. And drag racing is the only place where a tip might have an advantage.

OP, Im about half your age and I bought a tip for the simple fact that I didnt care to mess with a stick in Chicago construction traffic. Also I know I am not the best shifter, I would rather just punch and go. No need to worry about down shifting, second gear pop out, clutch, or over rev.

Jitsu- I respect your view of the 6 speed cars being a better experience. However your logic by displaying 6speedonline comparison numbers to prove performance of the 6speed cars are superior to the tiptronics is flawed since there is a disproportionate number of highly modded 6 speed cars vs tips out there. I really would like to see two cars with equal mods one being a tip and the other 6 speed. I think the tip will win since it never out of boost between shift...at least not with the A28s. I would love to see a race with a 800rwhp tip vs 800rwhp 6speed...that would be far more interesting of a race then a 996 vs GTR.

 

Do we really need this... again!? There has been some good points made from both sides! Here's the bottom line... At 484.7 awhp & 529 awtq I don't really want to take my hands off the steering wheel to shift... every second or two! On the other hand... a 6 speed can take more torque & hp then a tip... unless the tips been modded!

 

That's what forum's are for, you can share your..... opinion with everyone else! : )
