Question about LSD

I have wondered this since I always read it on here, but why does everyone with the 996tt's always say don't get an LSD if you keep AWD? Just curious, but many AWD cars have a rear LSD and I was wondering why everyone says don't do one on a 996tt. I do a lot of autocrossing and road courses, not with a 996tt yet unfortunately, and know how much they can help there normally. Can anyone fill me in?

Really? The general consensus is for an LSD as far I can tell. RWD or AWD. I will get one on my next TT.

I have the LSD and love it. Previously I used be able to easily spin the tires, even in 4th gear, with the LSD it just transfers to the power.

I have the UMW 2c K24/26's, the boost comes on gradually and peaks between 3750-4250 rpm pending your intake plenums. When I was doing the durametric tuning runs, I was able to spin the tires in 4th at about 4000rpm...at 6500' and 91 octane. Other members (prche951, koalacowboy ...etc) here have been in the passenger seat when it happened. I have the Gard 40/60 LSD and now a mod'd tranny (see my sig line below). PRCHE951 has a similar setup but wit the K16 based turbos, they boost insanely fast but don't have the top end like mine.

AWD here and using quaife LSD. no issues as far as i know. Guards is better overall, think that's concensus. for st. quaife is enough. Track, arguable. ANother brand is OS Giken which I used in 2 different JDM cars. really good LSD would have gotten i if i it was available at time of purchase. good luck

Interesting, seems like a lot of ya'll do have a LSD with AWD. I thought it would be ok as well, but I remember seeing several posts of people saying no. Mad Ness you track your car with the LSD and AWD right? How does it feel?

Spot on Guards/Giken for track and the Quaife is great for street

dont track this car, but drive it pretty hard on twisties, works fine. issue with this one is in cases where one of the rear wheels looses contact with the ground.

Is it Box out to fit? Can it be done to a Tip?

Have to admit, this is the first car since 1985 that I have owned that does not have a slipper fitted.
Last one I had was a ZF 90% plated slipper in the rear. VC slipper in the centre and a Quaife TBD in the front.
Great for doing Donuts and controlling the rear on drifts. Opps not supposed to do that are we.

Just curious why do you say Quaife for the street and the others for the track?

IMO, it's one of the strongest diffs (Quaife ATB), it uses gears rather than plates, the ATB is not so good for the track, track junkies would use the plate diff, OEM, Guards, OS Giken, Carbonetics etc, the downside here is the plates do wear and would need more maintenance, the Quaife would go on and on.

As 996tt_STEVO says the Quaife Torque Bias Differential uses gears not a plate. Requires no oil changes and is less aggressive on your shafts and drive train. It is also progressive in its action. The more torque you put through it the more it locks. usually between 20% to 75%. You can change the characteristics by changing the multiple washer springs inside the diff. However compared to plated slipper such as ZF, Getrag they do not deliver the best traction and torque split. A plated diff might also need oil changing after every event or as little 2000 miles of road use.
