What about playing with diff ratio rather than messing with gear sets. Im yet to drive a 996tt so i dont know how crap the gearbox ratio is.

However can you simply (i say simply but its not that simple) change the diffs from another model to change the gearing? Is there another model porsche that uses teh same diff housing but with a different ratio of the diff?

Or would you then kill off 3rd gear upwards trying to correct 1st gear?

If you want to convert it to 2WD changing the ring and pinion ratio is "simple". If you keep it, not so much. The shaft that drives the VC and transfers the power up to the front is part of the pinionshaft. Since the AWD gearbox isn't really considered a motorsports item, there's not really any aftermarket support for alternative final drives.

Something you need to keep in mind here with this is that the ring and pinion is built into the gearbox so you don't just change a final drive like you do on a car with a separate rear end (like an M3 for example). The whole box comes apart and the whole thing must be rebuild to change the final drive.
