What's in your Tippy? (Tip tronic)??
I'm not sure about a full rebuilt, however when the time comes I'll attempt a refresh.
A friend of mine, who is a MB tech, looked at it and said it's basically a common MB trans with Porsche specific parts tacked on (ie, transfer case, differential). I'm sure that sourcing the proper clutch packs from Mercedes wouldn't be a challenge.
Almost all the bearings on the transfer case side are available.
I'm having a hard time sourcing one of the INA bearings I'd like to replace, but apparently according to the INA US rep there hasn't been one imported to the US before so it's not in their catalog. They were however able to find it in the German catalog so it's a possibility that I'll get it. Hopefully I'll know before the end of the week.

Me and my TT ohh and wife too
are relocating to Germany early next year. So I will be on the look out for the German hook-ups and will pass them along to all here of coarse. Been dreaming about hot lapping the ring!!!!

As it happens I would love to to to Germany
I would like to firstly go to Stuttgart holy grail and all that, then the Scwartswalt, then the Nordschleife followed by the Rhineland and finally to the North to see the U Boat pens seeing I spent 22 years in the RN Submarine Service. My next passion from Cars is Submarines. The Germans were the ultimate designers of submarines and many features we have now were designed in WW2.
Hope you enjoy it over there.

Just to update on the MKB that I have installed on my car.
I have run it for around 2500 without issues until couple of weeks. I got a p0701 code. We checked the level since MKB said that 200-300mls of ATF short could cause the issue. It was 220 short. However I had it happen (same code) again a few days ago. IIRC it was changing from 2nd to 3rd on WOT, not the normal 3rd to 4th.
MKB are picking up the gearbox and will be inspecting it and fixing any issue. I am also getting them to do the rear differential because it is moaning like hell and you cannot get a repair kit from Porsche. It looks like the bearings are from GKN.
There was no quibble from MKB. They have responded quickly and have arranged to pick up the box and TCU.
BTW, I do know that MKB change the housing of the clutch packs to be able to fit more in, and they use kelvar clutch plates as used in motorsport.
I don't know whether the issue is slippage related. It could be other things. No other codes have been tripped so it is difficult. It might also be that the rear diff is causing an issue.
3rd gear is the smallest clutch pack, which seems crazy because when you think about it, you probably drive more in 3rd (well I do) than other gears.
I am doing some further testing on the gearbox later this week before it gets removed. The car is still driveable and I have done the same driving without repeating the issue. But 2 times in the space of 200 miles points to something being wrong.
Will update in a month since I am going on holidays shortly, which is handy since the gearbox will get sorted while I am away.

So, here's where the whine came from:

Basically I bought the car with a blown transmission mount. (DO NOT DRIVE WITH A BROKEN MOUNT, ESPECIALLY AGGRESSIVELY)I assume that someone drove it like that for a while and it appears that the sudden excessive movement either damaged the bearing or made the seger(sp?) ring retaining the bearing jump out of its bore. When I pried on it to remove the seal ring I felt it click into place and the back and forward play reduced drastically. The good news is that the damage is not that bad, but the bearing needs to be replaced.
Below is the pics of the carnage:

No it's not supposed to be shining like a mirror:

Here's the Seal Ring I carefully removed in case I need to reuse it. It's got MB part# and a Porsche part#. Both dealers looked at me cross-eyed like I recovered it from a Roswell crash site. Luckily it's a metric seal ring made by KACO and will be here in 3 days.

This is a roller/needle bearing that supports the front output shaft on the other end. Tiny bearing. I initially thought that the cage has a crack, however upon closer inspection I realized that it's a steel cage that is made like that. I'd like to replace this part too just to be safe and whine free, however if I cant get it it should still be OK.
I suppose I'll be the first one to import one into the states without the rest of the car/trans. A Google search revealed one hit. Ironically a magazine in Poland (I'm Polish
)listed it for sale but out of stock. After contacting INA NA, I was told how to have the local distributors look it up to import it from Germany. Hopefully "Sie" Germans will cooperate and this is not a Proprietary MB part.

And here's how the TIPPY looks without the transfer case:
I guess to get to the clutch packs you have to dig in from the other side, the one with the pump

Hi Ken,
I'm holding out for an LSD for the rear, there is supposedly one going to be available very soon...
I wonder if the bearings and seals will be a problem for that.?
Have a great Holiday,
Frank.
Do you know the part numbers for the rear diff then? That would be really helpful.

And here's the front if you ever need it:

you hold the brake down and give it as much as gas as you can before the brakes start to give....this gets you boost earlier (my brakes start to give at 2300 RPM in 1st gear and 2500-2600 RPM in 2nd gear
VividRacingTX had a TC that would stall his car up to 3k RPMs, allowing him to launch with boost

I'm in a temporary place with all of my tools in storage, so my DIY capability is limited. I've just noticed a whine on deceleration in the last week or so, but I've also been noticing a rattle when the engine's lugging right around 2k. I'm wondering if that's from harmonics acting on a blown mount. My car has similar mileage to yours.
