Please guys keep your fingers crossed. I'm attempting to put this beast together today again. Hopefully everything goes smooth.
Good news, I have my fingers and toes crossed for you.
I did my ATF change but am still getting slip changing form 3rd to 4th especially under full load so looks like my Tip is on the way out.

Hi Alex,

How are you, been a while since we have spoken. How is your car. Did you get the PSM/Abs fixed. I cant remember if you have said.
Well the box has done 52,000 miles. The slip & clunk is not excessive at the moment. I have adopted a manual approach to changing in that gear. That is I ease back off the power just a little when changing. Stops the slip & clunk.
To be honest , not that I want it to break , as soon as it does I will send it to MKB for the upgrade. That is the foundation for the next power mods to the car .

Frank I don't have any issues with the car (thank GOD!) maybe it was somebody else.
From what I understand the packs between 3 and 4 are small...

Adam,

How did you get on with solving the whine? I have a very similar issue / noise in my manual (i'm assuming the AWD transfer is similar in both?). To recap.... around 40-50 mph and on over-run it really howles, above and below that speed range its fine.

thanks Adam,

I've had it checked by a few P gbox experts and they seem to think its the main pinion bearing. Almost as common as 2nd gear pop-out im told.

Well, that's actually where I've arrived at at this point. After the transfer case surgery I still have the whine. The only bearing I haven't touched and I've changed 99% of them by now is the rear differential pinion bearing which is what I'll tear apart next doesn't look too challenging from looking at it. Funny thing thou, in my quest to fixing this I've came across many bearings that looked overheated, damaged and spun so in a way it's a good thing that I've had the opportunity to catch them before any major failure.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did they quote you for the job?

Yeah thats what really hurts of course. I've got 2nd gear issues as well and they are takling $6K to $8K depending on what else they find in there. If it has damaged the C&P as well...add another $3K.

That's a steep price tag. considering the market value our cars hold at this point. I'll try to do a writeup on the pinion bearings. Anyone have an idea as to what the preload should be on these in a tip?

Im in Australia and just about died when I saw what these cars are now worth in the US. They cost 4x as much here on the 2nd hand market and 1 USD = 1 AUD at present!

Guys wish me luck, I'm tearing it open again today as none of my crazy fixes solved the whine

This time I'm going straight for the rear differential pinion bearing which involves taking the whole front of the trans apart, again....grrr

I'll post up some pics once I get to that part.

Hey adam, best of luck on your trans build. I had my self a leaking trans in my 997tt and gave up because I found renntech has their upgrade for the 996/7 tt tiptronics. Maybe someone in their trans department can give you a hand.
