If the noise goes away above 1500rpm there is nothing to worry about...If it doesnt...start to worry...

they all have the can of bolt sound, try a lwf, it gets worse, but it goes faster, you can then outrun the noise!!!(faster than the speed of sound)

Hmmm, you want to meet up sometime and compare IMS noises? When I got my PPI, I remember pointing out the chatter at BW and my SA pulled up a 997.1 Turbo, fired it up and showed me the same noise.

On the same token, last month, my BW SA showed me a 996 Turbo on a lift getting the IMS replaced because "it was very loud."

I know this thread has reassured me that having an engine that sounds like its gonna blow up and a can of metal marbles is normal for a porsche. Thats pretty funny.

I've noticed this too. If I lug the engine around at around 1.5-2k rpm while in thraffic, when I get home the noise is very noticeable. Although if I try to maintain the rpms over 2k, by the time I get home the noise is hardly noticeable.

Like Ari said, these cars are meant to be driven and driven hard. My observations support this theory.

I had the same problem and HATE it. had the engine opened up twice and replaced the IMS. It fixed the problem for 600 miles and now the sound is back. Putting on a Europipe exhaust made the noise sound even worse when at idle or under 2k. sounds like the car is going to break any second. If there was a permanent fix, I would do it in a second.

Bah at least i can tell people its because of the Flywheel and not explain how "its completely normal to have IMS failure and the potential causes of it and......... yes i assure you its normal i even made a thread on 6 speed about it."
