Radar detectors
So my most trusted Porsche shop recommends K40 at $2200. With poor feedback and the expense this seems to be a poor choice. The Passport 9500ci seems nice and stealthy, but with a cost of $1500 plus install seems very pricey. Need to avoid 5 tickets to even out! I don't drive that fast.
As such, plenty of great feedback on the V1, which in the website retails at $399. This really seems like a very simple decision.
As such, what are people doing in California? V1 top of windshield with a remote monitor on the dash? Any sneakier/better way to install it? Adding a laser jammer (yah I know not legal in CA, but it seems with 2 front and 1 back sensor the fine is only $100; IF it is found).
I'd love a V1 with a professional install that guaranteed great front/rear coverage, but still kept the unit fairly subtle. Not sure if that is possible.

Don't get the K 40, its junk!!!! The passport is a very good radar detector (it sells alone for $499) and is comparable to the V1 (usually people favor the Passport in city, and V1 for highway).
However the laser shifter that is part of the $1500 package is far far inferior to the Laser Interceptor.
The V1 Laser Interceptor combo is widely regarded as the best combo possible.

They do, sort of....there is a small control unit that allows the main unit to be turned off. Cops will still see the main unit if they pull you over.
Frankly this was my immediate thought as well....
OP- you can ask valentine for one of their 'free 30 day trial return units'...10% off, full warranty and all. They usually say 'we dont have any' and put you on the wait list. But in a few days they find one and ship it.
I laugh when I see people selling used V1s with no warranty for $300-350 in the For Sale forums...

I have a V1 and really didn't think the beloved arrows were such a big deal until I drove a car with a Passport Escort 9500i the other day. While SOME alert is better than no alert, it's nice to know where the bogey is potentially located.
