Radar detectors

Anyone have any thoughts on a good radar/laser/camera detector that pairs well with a 996tts?

I haven't owned one since I drove a z28 in college. At that point in time it seemed that it mostly detected garage door openers and microwaves.

Would it be worth it?

I have a K40 for sale if interested, invisible and completly integrated in the car. Otherwise, i don't know anything about radar detectors, highly illegal here in Canada.

I have a 9500xi escort and love it. Definitely worth buying one. The V1 is also a great one. I recommend you get a refurb escort 8500 for $150 or so. It will do everything you need and won't break the bank. If you live in VA or CA you are SOL as they are not legal there from what I an told

Wink

I drive with one everyday and I live in CA. I was pulled over once (not speeding) and the officer said that it was legal but that I had to have it mounted in the bottom left corner of the windshield. Of course I brushed this suggestion off as it specifically states in the manual that the V1 works most efficiently/accurately when placed in the middle of the windshield, Im not too fond of officers or their advice...

V1 but if you drive a lot of local roads, you'll get a lot of false alarms

it's legal in 49 states (illegal in VA)

The V1 is easily programmable. Based on where you live, you can determine what kind of radar the cops use. Almost every "modern" radar gun is a K band type, and X band is no longer used. (last time I ran into X band was in rural eastern Oregon, where I actually saw cop cars with duct tape patches).

X band is the false alarm culprit since almost every type of non-radar signal which your detector picks up is the X type. You can program your V1 to ignore X band. Mine is set to ignore X band (Las Vegas no longer uses X), and I set it to highest sensitivity (All signals). Absolutely no false alarms, ever. And when it goes off, police are present. It never fails.

Programming instructions are in the manual.

Good to know on the V1, I have had mine ever since I got popped on Skyline Bkvf 6 months ago. I get the false alarms as well. I think they are from the traffic flow monitors along the highway and always in the same band. So will setup to ignore per advice above- cheers!

The are a number of good sites that will help you pick what is right for you.

Here are some links to help:

I have a $2k K40 installed in my GT3. It is useless. My old passport 8500 is better.

8500 X50 - I've had it for years. Very few false alarms, but you learn to tell the difference when you are working up to a solid tone.

There are several good detectors out there as the replies have already suggested. It comes down to the performance and feature set. I struggled between the V1 and the Escort 9500ix. The V1 has great range and displays the direction from which the signal is transmitted. The 9500ix has GPS to eliminate false alarms and alert you to speed cameras and red light cameras. Those *%@# speed cameras are showing up everywhere in MD so I went with the 9500ix. I can't speak for the V1, but the 9500ix is plenty loud enough to hear with the top down on my 996tt at highway speeds - and I have a pretty aggressive exhaust note.

My .02

First pick: Passport 9500ci (the one built in). I have a 3 year old V1 in my Lexus and the 9500ci is in the 996. The passport works considerably better than the V1. Especially the laser detector. With the 9500ci, when it makes a peep,I'm on the brakes to check speed. With the V1, I have to look at the arrows and try to determine if it's false or real.

If you go with window mount units, go with the V1.
Built in: 9500ci.
