emissions fail - time until re-test

my car failed inspection for emmissions, the car hadnt been driven for a few days when they tested it, they literally just started the engine and tested it

took it to my regular guy and he said the status is 'not ready' and that it needs to be driven for 100 miles or so, i drove it 120 took it back to him and he sadi it still says not ready

anyone know how nfar i have to drive it until its ready ?

Robin@EPL is infamous around these parts
The car needs to go through a few complete drive cycles to set readiness. Put some miles on it and cycle the key a few times. Also helps if the cats are good and hot when you go for the test.

I had the same issue last year - failed Texas emissions twice. The car remained in "Not Ready" state after a couple of 75 mile drives at freeway speed. Constant speed did not work -A drive cycle - idle, row thru the gears, stop & go, constant roll at speed, etc. was required. Following is a thread from the Pelican forum I followed:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...rocedures.html

Note- the link details 993s which I understand are much more difficult to reset. Good luck!

OP. Was the DME ever reset? It seems unusual to just have readiness failures out of the blue unless there was a reset relatively recently....

DING DING DING...

readiness is cleared when the car sits with out voltage. put a 50-100 miles on and you will sail right through again!

Did the dealer specifically tell you "you failed smog due to high HCs" (in which case your complaint that they 'failed to warm it up' might be a contributor) of did they just say 'cannot pass smog' (due to the same readiness codes you are now seeing- in which case it isn't a warm up issue.)

You need to find out which of the MULTIPLE readiness codes you are not setting.... you can have usually one or two that are not ready, and still pass smog. One common issue is with tunes that turn off one of the systems to avoid CELs...these will always show 'not ready'. The issue happens when the car then gets an evap failure or secondary air failure (or other) that takes a long time to reset.

Have it scanned for readiness settings...

I am not sure the # of miles is the critical factor. I followed the 993 reset procedures (link from earlier post) as closely as possible (agree very difficult to do). I believe the key is to keep the RPM down under 3K & MPH <60 thru the process rather than follow the steps exactly. Any stab of the throttle, additional RPM or MPH over 60 seems to stop the reset. My suggestion is to start the car let idle for couple of minutes, short shift to the nearest farm road (keeping RPM <3K) and drive 15-20miles at a constant 50- 60MPH if possible. Totally bites as two farmers passed me in pick ups pulling trailers as well as an old woman in a Crown Victoria

I know it sounds strange but it worked. You may also want to Google BMW drive cycle as I believe they developed the process.

Good luck!

I have the same issue, car has Cat eff. and O2 sensor heater not ready. If I drive hard the cat code will go ready and by the time I get to the inspection place it goes off again.

Stock exhaust and EPL tune is the extent of my mods. This started after the flash for me.
