Sorry, yet another, help on this 996tt..

I am interested in this car, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...cks#vi-content. But the dealer really is not very informed on what mods have been done to it...Porsche racing turbos and Ecu software upgrade to German spec really isn't telling me much. lol. Anyone on here familiar with it? Thanks much.

Depends it could just be an x51 stock and they are upselling it, or it could have 18g compressors with a flash n 5bar fpr best to get a ppi done somewhere that can tell the difference.

Gotcha. For some reason I glossed right over the x51 performance upgrade. Talking to a salesman the other day was a complete waste of time, I will follow your advice and hopefully set up a PPI. Thanks

Good looking car, looks like it may need some paint work around the gas cap. ~7pm there appears to be a scratch, which would indicate careless fueling or potentially the hinge was broken and not fixed, which allowed it to rub the fender.

Price is a little high, unless you want the mods on the car, in which case would make it a deal. I'd dig for the paperwork on this car, car fax, vin search at the dealer to find the prior owner and see where the service had been done.

Get a ppi, that car has Champion RG5's on it, and 6-pot brembos. Those are not "beginning" mods, I bet alot has been done to this car.

Nice find. Ditto what everyone else has said. Have it taken to a local shop and they can give you a better idea what kind of mods were done and the overall condition of the car. I bought my 01 996tt back in May and it had the same milage and was priced similarly but mine is a bone stock 1 owner car. I negotiated the price to well under $40K so there should be some wiggle room since performance mods don't really add value to a car except to the right buyer.

Other than what others have said it looks like it has an exhaust upgrade maybe Tubi or Europipe. The pic of the label under the hood didn't say X-50 in the options list so doesn't look like it has that. It is definitely sitting lower than stock so looks like it has had suspension work done.

I don't see an "X51" upgrade, actually no "x5_"...look at the underhood sticker for all factory options.

No idea what an X51 is, I cannot see this in the order guide either.

They have no clue as to what they are selling, so your are 100% blind. Not a 'non-starter', but makes it more difficult.

As all are saying, get a PPI from a QUALIFIED mechanic- include all the items in a CPO inspection PLUS add a dump of the DME for error codes and over-rev data.

s/b X50 (which is the K24 Turbo package)

X51 is a performance package for naturally aspirated models

I agree with your thought process and conclusion, but those are not Champion RG5's.

I think a very thorough PPI is in order. There are a couple of very good places down in Ventura County (about 30 minutes south). If you need a referal, shoot me a PM.

X50 package wasn't available until 2002.

Really interested to see what the story behind this car is. Has a C4s lip on it, the Brembo's would indicate this car has or at least at one time had serious power and probably some track use. Even though the X-50 didn't come out until '02, swapping the stock K16's for K24's (x-50 package) is a popular mod which would also account for the GT2 intercoolers. Something tells me that this car is running K24-18's, just too many mods that make me lean that direction (lets call it a hunch). I don't think too many people would put the 8pot Brembos on for stock K24's and even less so for K16's. Also, since it has a Gemballa Short Shifter in it, could mean that they did other Gemballa mods. If I remember correctly, I think the Gemballa Turbos were K16 variants, so could possibly be K16 hybrids or could be Garret G28's, but I could be WAY off on this one. This car could be a really great find, or could be a can of worms. But one thing for sure, THE WARTS HAVE TO GO!!!

Thanks much for all the help and pointers. I am going to call today and set up a PPI. This car looks like it really fits the bill for me as I want seal grey and I want a car with mods. But I want to know exactly what mods have been done. I will update with what I find out if all goes as planned. Thanks again for the help!
