AlanS is infamous around these parts
I had the B&M Shifter and went to the 997 Short Shifter. Like everyone says the 997 Short Shifter is much smoother than the B&M, but has slightly longer throws than the B&M. Overall I think the 997 Short Shifter is a good compromise. Although it's more than the B&M shifter the installation time should be shorter. It's a pretty easy DIY job.

You may also want to the consider the 997 Front Transmission Mount. This is a little more difficult to install, but it noticably helps with the shifting.

The first thing to ask is are you looking to Power Shift? IE Drag Race? Notchy only matters if you're trying to power shift.

My car had a B&M when I bought it and hated it. Very well could have been a bad install, but very notchy and very difficult to find 3rd from 2nd. Installed a 997 shifter (not the 997 ssk) and I am very happy with it. Not as short a throw as the B&M, but I seem to shift as quick or quicker. 997SSK might be a good option as most have had good luck with it.

Yeah, I think I have had a B&M SS shifter in most every car I have owned over the years, but the 996 and the cable system isn't the most desirable feel...just my .02.

HI,I had the B+M fisrt, installed at Porsche dealer.....Then drove a turbo with the 997 short shifter.....Night and day difference in smoothness and being notchy...Yes, I understood two different cars and install.......But then I took the B+M out and had the 997 installed, the Porsche dealer did it........Glad I did.......Hope that helps

Please check out our Agency Power short shifter with billet shift linkage. We have sold over 200 of these worldwide and they are very popular in alternative to the B&M and 997SSK.

+1 on the Agency Power SSK. I just had this kit installed with the linkage last week and am extremely satisfied. I can't comment on how it compares to the 997 ssk, but with the linkage and ssk it is a great value.
  • No notchiness
  • Crisp shifts between gears (no more hitting the gate from 2-3 shift)
  • Good reduction in throw
