ETS 16 Row: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...7-2-gt2rs.html Install mod writeup here: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ml#post3012158 Just got a set of 997.2 / GT2 RS intercoolers that I'll be doing a full writeup/996 install/test on, but I've got to post my initial impressions: They are bigger, the end tanks are awesome, and the fin density is insane. Much more to follow, but at the $900 price point (less if you can find them used -thanks Champion Motorsports!), you ain't seen anything like this... Porsche did their homework folks ...hopefully they'll fit somehow hilarious some teasers: top view (997.2 on top, 996 on bottom), the core is shorter (albeit thicker), but that's to make room for the beastly end tanks: http://i53.tinypic.com/5khgdj.jpg from da side: http://i55.tinypic.com/dpu984.jpg from da other side: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ine=1371101378 outlet end tank restrictions...fixed https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ine=1371101378 into the end tanks (hole diameter is the same as the 996, but hey its been to 620hp/22psi & flogged on the 'ring, good enough for me): https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ine=1371101378 look at that inlet tank (and fin density)! https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ine=1371101378 996 outer fin density (not bad compared to some budget "upgrades") https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ine=1371101378 997.2 outer fin density (we're creeping into aerospace quality here) http://i53.tinypic.com/ajtmdl.jpg 996/997.1 core (note the open channels near the left edge) https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ine=1371101378 997.2 core (better pics to come, but compare this to the budget IC options out there (if they'll give you a pic of the core), also note the full core width is used, unlike the 996/997.1 -again, getting into aerospace quality) You get 3.15" of actual core, as opposed to 2.25" on the 996/997.1 coolers. https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ine=1371101378 Stay tuned for further dissection and an on-car thermal comparison against the stock IC (997.2 on one side, 996 on the other) using a Fluke 52 dual channel, type-k thermocouple based thermometer. |

meh... i still would go with after market ones ,

They're $900 for the pair from Porsche?

PNs: 997.110.639.70 Left Intercooler 997.110.640.70 Right Intercooler These will at least require duct trimming and relocating (or eliminating) one of the inlet tank pins (on each side) to fit -otherwise they look like they'll handle the rest of the factory hookups. |
Although they may cool better than the 996 version, the only problem I see is the oulets are necked down to 1 7/8" for the OEM hose fittings to seat and if you bore them out, there is no structure under the seat and you would destroy them. The aftermarket IC's can be made to accomodate 2.5" flow - I don't think these can...

I would put these against the $1500 IC crowd in thermal efficiency any day.

Not bad for stock, but they still have plastic end tanks. Ends tanks could leak. Better off with one of the aftermarket tuners.
|
I found it strange how stock end tanks have a very narrow end tanks that do not push air across the whole core... lol finally they are using the complete IC across vs. just a little bitty neck in the middle... looks familiar?

ear13 let us know how it goes.

Aftermarket isn't always better unfortunately. From a visual standpoint, I think these will be tough to beat in terms of bang for the buck efficiency in the 400-600hp range & I've tested a LOT of intercoolers on various cars (mainly the Supra). I know a good core when I see one. Granted the pricier intercoolers will probably outperform them, I'd be game to compare them to one of the popular $1500 sets (on the same car at the same time, Tout vs Tout on my flashed K16 car). Popping the end tank off, here's a core comparison (note the 14 rows vs 11 over the 996): http://i56.tinypic.com/2qv4d3c.jpg here's a popular $1500 aftermarket core: (source: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...r-install.html ) http://i51.tinypic.com/2hedp95.jpg which do you think cools better? for a mildly upgraded car (think 450-600hp) would you trust an IC that's been tested thoroughly on the ring and other test facilities in a 620hp, 22psi of boost GT2 RS (that was designed by a multi-million dollar heat exchanger company who is also a supplier to Airbus) or one that was built in a Chinese factory for pennies on the dollar? (the core in the pic above is available on ebay for $50 bucks and hails straight from China) Hopefully they're not all cheapies from China, but I'd love to see some core pics on these $1500 "upgrades" -have you ever seen any posted from the manufacturers? (not directed at you, Mark, you're very up front with how & what yours are made from and I commend you. IMO, yours are absolutely worth the extra coin) All I'm saying is do your homework -if someone's claiming near 90% efficiency with <1% pressure drop (what does that even mean?) & no IAT logs, that should set off a warning. Anyways, I'll shut my trap 'til testing is complete. :) |

Besides the outward extended cooling finns, is the 996 gt2 ic any better than the stock tt ic ?
