+1 - if you have Nav, the Denison system uses the CD player interface to drive the IPod. You get IPod and lose CD. I went the other way - I replaced the entire Nav (can't get maps anyway) with a Pioneer Double Din (AVIC Z120BT). Now I have Nav, CD, DVD, MP3, IPod, SD, FM, AM and SAT radio = happy.
My car is a 2001 with the PCM1 CD based tape deck nav unit. The compatibility chart on Dension's site shows 2003 and newer cars.

Yeah, I tried the FM modulator too. I'm not a big fan of the music quality when you go that route.
I looked into the Denison interface before I decided to replace the head unit, and I'm pretty sure there was something available for PCM1. I just looked at their compatibility chart and they are listing the same years for PCM1, PCM2 and PCM2.1 - that doesn't make sense - I think their chart is incorrect. If you want to go that way, it would be worth giving them a call.

Slightly off topic, but I'm pretty much thinking of replacing the entire nav/head unit. Is it something you can do yourself? Are the new units "plug and play"? I've never done anything like this, but, yeah the PCM1 is pretty much useless now...
Was looking at the new Sony XNV-770BT unit if it matters...

You will not regret replacing PCM 1. That thing is nothing but a heavy paper weight. I had someone do the install - it was like 300. There is pre and post MOST on the 996's. Mine is an 01 (so pre) and I think is a little cheaper to install. Wish I did this a week after I bought the car.
He seemed to do it himself.

Yep, that's what I did (Pioneer AVIC Z120BT). Give Loi (see above) a call to get the kit. I had to be a little more creative for the wiring because, with PCM1, not all cars are the same. Loi will help you sort out everything, but it really isn't that complicated.

I just recieved and installed this. It works great for me:

Kala, sorry for the late replay. Yes, the cable iwirep has been working great in my '01; it chages and plays my iPod classic no problem. I doesn't work on my iPhone but there's an upgrade from iwirep that allows you to play the newer Apple devices.
I bought this external radio MP3/phone wiring harness from Harman/Becker of North American back in 2003 to install in a MY 2002 Boxster S to run my ipod. I never got around to installing it as I sold the Boxster and purchased a 2003 TT, which has the newer PCM 2.0 MOST technology and does not support this harness. The harness is for CR220, CDR220, BE4602, Mexico Pro and Traffic Pro head units. The instructions state that it provides an auxiliary input that can be used for an MP3 or phone. Playback is heard through the headunit/speakers. If you're interested in it drop me a PM.
