lightweight flywheel
lightweight flywheel
One person is advising me to go with a lightweight flywheel next week when I do a Stage 2 clutch upgrade. Spools up faster and will give performance gains.
I've read some posts detailing people not liking the LWFW, noise is apparently a problem at idle?
Also my dealer specifically recommended not doing a LWFW because it would mess up motor timings and possibly give warning lights.
Should I install the LWFW or not?

couple things...if you do the lwfw be sure and do the RS pulley as well to help with the different crank balance...(some members have lost the stock front crank pulley after going to lwfw)...if you don't track forget the lwfw because it will make a lot of noise for the street especially if you are in the habit of putting the tranny in neutral instead of holding in the clutch...if your dealer is jumpy I would forget it because if you have a major engine failure after the fact PCNA will not warranty because of the lwfw...there is a warning issued by PCNA about this subject
I enjoy how much more eager the engine seems to rev with the LWFW installed, but as GT3 Chuck has said, noise at idle is a concern. The car exhibits a very noticeable chatter/clunk type noise with the LWFW and it seems to get louder with the A/C turned on. If you use drive-through to get food/coffee/etc., be prepared to have your foot on the clutch or risk the person not being able to hear you over the noises. You will also get concerned looks from other motorists at traffic lights because they will think something is broken on your car.
I just noticed that you have a Cab, so the noise will be even more pronounced for you. I'd let you try out my car to get a feel of the LWFW first hand, but you are a bit too far from me. My suggestion is to hear a car with it in person and possibly get some seat time to see if you can tolerate that noises that accompany the performance gains.

If you want to talk about noise put in a triple disc..
It would be nice if there was a single mass flywheel that was the weight of the dual mass flywheel. It would not stop the noise but it will help with traction on a high hp car.

It is noisy at idle with the clutch out, and while spooling at very low rpm. Otherwise, I like it.

I did the lwfw and gt2 upgrade, the lwfw is the least favorite of my upgrades as I try to keep the car as user friendly and stock feeling as possible. The down side is the engine is easy to stall, noisy, but the faster revs is a plus. I don't think I would do it again. just me .02
Had an 964RS LWFW at my 996TT for 2 years...
+ are the increased performance and revving, less lag
- noise at idle when hot,on/off feeling of clutch...
Overall outcome...I had LWFW at all my manual cars for 15 years now...
I will do it again...If I get a manual ever again...

Up to you, what do you prefer, performance or comfort?
BTW, that bbwu's video is quite enlightening. That's the noise to outside, in my car it's even more disturbing inside. But if you're standing behind the car there's no transmission rattle to be heard at all.

It also depends on how "light" of a flywheel you get. The lighter, the noisier. You can get them from 8lbs to 14lbs. I think mine weighs 12lbs and it barely makes any noise, drives similar to stock, but I still feel the quicker spool. It also puts less drag on some of your engine components.

I put 964 and Sachs in my car and tracked a lot for 3 years with no pulley problems and no internal problems either. No CEL's either. You can really get people's attention if you also put racing brake pads on the car. then people at the stop light will really think it's falling apart. ;-)
