Post Headlight Restoration -- Film Over Clear Coat?

Tired of my yellowing, flaking headlights I resolved to do something about them! A few months back I bought a clear mask film set but it's been sitting in the room waiting for application. A little while later I decided that I needed to polish these lights prior to any application. I was too nervous about sanding them myself, so I took them to a local body shop (Mr. Polish in LA). $160 later and here they are. They sanded and clear coated them (they also sealed a large crack in the bottom of the black portion of the light--and I had to replace the mounting plate).

Now I am left with the decision to apply the film over the newly coated lenses. I am concerned that the soap/isopropyl/adhesive combination might jack up the clear coat they put on. What do you think?

Film it for sure.

The water/adhesive on films is an entirely different chemistry as compared to the solvent based clearcoat. If you want to be safe, give it 2-4 weeks to fully cure/outgas.

We polish and clear coat yellowing headlamps at a rate of about 20 per month. If you apply clear decal over the clear coated lens, expect the clear to come off when you remove the decal at a later time. In my opinion, there is nothing gained with the clear decal - after the lamps have been clear coated.

Arrow +1...

...add the film.

I used XPEL 30mil. thick film.

Did sides, tails, 3rd & 4th brake lights too.

Bulletproof.

I'd leave them in the sunlight for a day or two to make sure that all solvents from the clear evaporate before you put the film on it.

If the film has anti UV properties, then put it on, otherwise it's nearly useless IMO.

Just apply a good anti UV sealant regularily and the lamps won't get yellow anymore.

+2. Xpel ultimate on my headlamps when the front got PPF installed. Great stuff and will prevent chips, cracks, UV fade.
