After 36 days, finally got my car back
Second gear pop out issue has been addressed under warranty...even if it did take 36 days for the dealer to complete the work. Couple new gear sets, synchros, slave, and RMS. I threw in a new clutch and 997 transmission mount since we were in there.
Trans is VERY notchy and somewhat difficult to get into each gear...especially when cold. I accidentally ground first once and second once. Nearly cried. Hopefully I didn't just totally screw up what was just fixed. Did I?

You are probably fine, but it doesn't take too many grinds in 2nd gear to bring on the 2nd gear pop-out condition. Porsche looks for signs of grinding when evaluating a 2nd gear pop-out warranty claim. If they see signs of grinding, the warranty will be denied.

He also recommended a short shift kit and thankfully, I have a 997 SSK sitting in the garage ready for installation.
And have him also document "Normal, customer told to drive the car for 500 miles and it will get better"
You'll see now "normal" it really is....

I'm in the market for a 996tt....I've heard about this 2n gear pop issue. How do I check or verify that a car doesn't have this problem? I don't know if it's something that can be seen at PPI...and from the maintainance/service records of the car is it something that I should ask about or look for...the car is an '02 X50 just like the OP...this thread has me a bit nervous. I asked the original owner (the car is a 1 owner car) and he told me it didn't ever have this issue...
any advice?

It's pretty obvious when it happens. I test drove a car that had it about a year ago- scared the crap out of me!
How come it was fixed under warranty? Do you have extended warranty on your 966tt?
In general 2nd gear is not a smooth entering gear I found, not only on the 996 but also on my BMW. I always shift pretty slow when the car is cold, and slowly shift regularly when everything is warmed up and everything is smoother. I also don't try to put the car into 1st (or reverse) while the car is moving.
One thing I found is that when I pull first gear (pretty scary in the turbo hehe) second goes in smoother (clicks in faster), is there a mechanical explanation for this?
I don't know if you have it on your car, but if I pull the gear lever towards me when I shift from 1st to 2nd it doesn't go in smooth, but if I apply less force to the side and try to just move it straight down to 2nd (without using the side sliding into second) it goes in smoother. I'll be happy to hear if it's the same on your car...

Take the car for a test drive. Accelerate in 2nd gear to near redline, then let off the gas. Decelerate until the revs are near idle- if the car pops out of gear, well...
