Post Trans Rebuild Help/Advice

Posted previously about just getting my car back after having the trans rebuilt under CPO but wanted to seek input on a specific question. The tech said that the trans would be very notchy and not "pleasant" to shift for a while due to the new synchros. I have no idea if this is right or not.

The car had been sitting outside for a couple of hours (34 degrees) so it was very cold and I had just a 8 mile drive home in stop and go traffic. Pretty hard to get into 1st and 2nd for about 5 miles and then got a little easier as the car warmed up.

I am a little concerned that the the shifter has not been adjusted properly. No grinding or anything getting into and out of gears (except the two times I screwed up due to the notchiness).

Thoughts?

Newly rebuilt transmissions are tight, and the friction material on syncros does need some wear in. I would not be worried at this point. I had mine rebuilt last month and it feels much like you describe.

I'm having the same issue, except mine actually pops out of first once in a while when cold. It's almost like it's not going in to first all the way. I'm also getting a little grind once in a while going in to first. Did your problem go away? I'm going to readjust the cables today to see if that resolves the problem.

total BS. i think you're on the right track with the shifter. however, "screwing up" and grinding your new synchro's can bring no joy. there is very little tolerance with the 1st/2nd gear synchro's for "grinding".

also, my ( then ) tech had to RE build his rebuild ( also covered CPO ) because he did NOT change the shims to allow for porsche's later recommendation ( in its tech papers ) to change the gear stack placement using shims to create a better placement of 2nd to allow for a more secure engagement.

not to freak you out, but you might want to ask if they put it back to "stock" or were aware of the "updated" recommendation.

your trans should not be "notchy" after a rebuild.

It's just a plastic alignment tool. It holds the shifter upright in neutral position while you put the cables back.

Part Number: 00072196190

I don't think the porsche adjustment tool will work with an aftermarket shifter
