Help with new fueling issue

2001 996 TT with 48K miles. Long story short, what started as a light fuel fume smell in the garage slowly developed into strong fumes and then a small fuel puddle under the front of the car over a period of weeks. That turned out to be a leak in the fuel tank where the plastic filler neck meets the plastic tank. Sourced a new fuel tank, and had my local Porsche/BMW shop do the repair. They have done this once before on a 996 C4S. Anyway, now the car won't take fuel at all at the pump. If I remove the vent hose under the round plastic lid in the trunk, I can fuel the car about 7/8 full at the SLOWEST flow rate the gas station pump can do. I have searched this forum and read about the fuse (not the problem), etc... I guess what I am looking for is a comprehensive list of possible causes. This would greatly help reduce the time it takes to troubleshoot the problem. Thanks in advance for the help 6speeders!

Shine some light down the filler with a cigarette lighter and see what is going on. Just kidding!!!

I am out of advice. Anyone else?

There might be an obstruction or kink, lower down in the vent line. Check the Vent hose again. Looks like there is a vacuum build and therefore the air cannot escape.

There is a vent valve several inches behind the filler neck. Remove the liner and check all connections. Pretty cheap part you may just want to change anyhow as they go bad often and seem to be delicate. It may have gotten jumbled during the install. My guess...

Good luck,

Interesting. Everytime I fuel mine, it spews out a good amount of fuel. I have to remember to wrap a rag or several plies of paper towels around the fill port or else it will be a mess.

Maybe I will poke around at the vent lines and see if anything is wrong.

to make sure the valve is working put your ear on the fender while sticking your finger into the filler neck and when that little metal flap door opens and closes you should here a clicking at the same time which will tell you the valve is working.

I did this and did hear the 'click' of the valve, so something happens. But it still spews quite a bit of fuel once the tank if filled.

I always find it weird but I usually have to slowly pump my gas into the car or the pump automatically stops if I try to pump to fast.

I have the same exact problem with mine... I have to go searching for paper towels before I start to fill my tank - every time.

Question for you guys that encounter the fuel spillage when pumping gas. I've only noticed this on mine when the pump is done pumping "nozzle clicks" and then you try to pump a little extra to round up your total gas price to the next cent / dollar amount. Then there is excess gas that spills out.

If I remove the nozzle when it clicks there is no extra gas that spews out.
