Quote: A TiptronicS 997TT is 1 second faster to 200 km/h. It is about 0.4 seconds faster to a quarter mile. It has a significantly faster launch because of brake boosting. In German auto magazines, the two cars have near identical 0-300 km/h times in Vmax testing and Nurburgring hot laps.

However, a 996 GT2 traps about 2-3 mph faster than a 997TT.

I guess it depends how you define faster.

This is not suprising, a tiptronic AWD car vs a RWD 6speed, faster to a certain speed or equal maybe but top end gt2 is very tough to beat. (130mph and up although most dont go that high anyways)

Great post...

Quote: on the street any of these cars are good, you don't really "drive" a car on the street (you more like guide it through mundane excercises), the car's are not getting utilized anywhere near what they are capable of unless they are driven at 10/10ths on a track lap after lap - and if an experienced driver is ringing them out in an enduro for hours on end that is where you see the real excellence of the marque, period. Therefor if you were considering a street car, get the one YOU fell most comfortable in, with the amenities you like, and the ride quality you prefer and the color combo that suits your taste...remmember you will likely spend more time in traffic with your morning coffee than threshold braking and rowing through gears so performance can take a back seat to comfort !

The 2011 GT2RS is a 3.6
Forgive me if someone made this point already...

The fastest Beetle of them all is the current GT2RS... Realize that the 997 is a completely different motor. The 996tt use a GT1 derived 3.6 liter motor. Why would Porsche "regress" to an earlier motor when building their ultimate road car???

Simple answer, it's a better engine.

I also think if you can find a GT2 with good ceramic brakes, that's another massive advantage.

Leave the 997tt's for the Tiptronic driving mid life crisis Angelenos here in SoCal - dime a dozen. Buy the GT2!!!

Well said and thanks for everyones's input
I appreciate everyone's help, it looks like the GT2 is in a class of it's own. The hard part is trying to put a price on these things they are all over the place. My purchase might be delayed as my dad is being tested for the dreaded C word. Dr. Thinks he saw something on his Pancreas, I am praying it is nothing. If you are a believer please say a prayer for us. Thanks again for everyones insight and it is great to have such a helpful forum.

Prayers go out to you and your dad *****. May the best come out of this ordeal for your family. Makes the whole discussion of 997TT vs. GT2 seem insignificant compared to what really matters in life...

Thanks to everyone, for the prayers
Got the report today my dad is clean, Praise the Lord. The mass on his pancreas is just a small non cancerous mass. Dr.s isn't concerned but will keep an eye on it. I might be back in the market after all, but have to take it slow, this was a big time scare for our family. Thanks again for all your wishes and prayers. Please let me know if I can help you.

I was in the same dilemma as you this time last year.

The 997TT has a nicer interior and is more user friendly but the GT2 is a rare bird that commands respect.

Needless to say I bought a GT2 and i have never seen another on the road in my town. The car is a hand full but will reward you with a smile every-time you get behind the wheel.

vanilla or spicy your choice!!!

I know the way you mean it, but guys, we are driving one of the hottest, most desirable cars on the planet! Even if it's a "plain vanilla" turbo. I know hundreds of people who'd give their right you know what for what we drive. My ultimate dream car when i was a kid was the turbo. I'm one of the few lucky ones who was able to fulfill that dream. Either way, you'll score a goal!
