Need to make a spare key

I only have 1 key for my Porsche, and I want to make another one to have spare just in case.

At the dealer here in Miami (the collection) it's about $550 to make a spare key.

I called Vertex automotive as well, the guy quoted me for $530. He said the key itself uncut plus a hour and a half (huh?) of programming.
What the hell can you program in a key for an hour and a half? Can this new key run windows?

Anyways I wanted to ask what did you do when you needed to make another key because I really wouldn't like to spend $600 with tax for a key.

Thanks.

Pick one up on eBay (make sure it comes with the codes) and drive it up to the stealership. They will ask you 70$ to program it. No, the Durametric tool can not do it (yet). Should set you back less than 200$.
While you're at it, do not forget about a valet key.

By the way - any late model (996, 997, CGT) key will work on your car. Think out of the box !

I paid $50 for the key,(eBay make sure it has the little code paper with it) $30 programed at a non Porsche dealership, took 2 minutes(Lamborghini/lotus dealer but they mod porsches) $25 to get it cut by a locksmith. Works perfectly two years later.
Call around see who can cut it, requires a special machine but I am sure you can find a guy.

It looks like a bar code with a bunch of numbers on it. To get the key programed they needs these numbers to do there job.
Where did you get the key from? Online? If you bought it from the dealer they will keep this piece of paper on file in case they need to refer to it later.

Problem is to cut the key and program it they charge around $300 if I recall correctly... I guess I will find someone who is not the dealer and not vertex.

Thanks yes the 996 turbo, and yes full head and blade.

I got an estimate of around $300 for a key from J&W here in the area, I will go there on Monday and update here on the actual cost and procedure because I understand because of theft they need to call the dealer, run the VIN# and make sure it's my car plus have the blade drilled there.

Found it on eBay, just did a search it came with the head an uncut blade and the original barcode with numbers still on the package.
I just looked on ebay that guy who has a bunch of them is asking way more than I paid. Like everything online search around and be patient if you can. Others will have some. It's that barcode you must have otherwise it won't work

2) key head $217.38
3) cut and code new key 0.5hours $70.00

Total: $315.91 plus tax
