Worth upgrading actuators? on x50 + exh + flash

I have an X50 with Milltek exhaust & 200 cel cats. Just planning my future mods for when the spring returns in the UK!

Are upgraded wastegates a good idea? I believe thay give around 30hp extra and hold the boost better. Would this require a different flash or would the normal X50 flash work? (EPL 93-fuel flash most likely)

My actuators do look quite corroded, so may have to be changed soon anyway!

Is there any point in using a 5bar FPR to raise the boost further, when the boost is limited by turbo size to approx 1.2bar on the K24's?

Appreciate your thoughts.....

IMO upgraded wastegates are worth it with the X50 (k24s). Talk to Tony at EPL about the flash, but I am pretty sure the flash will do fine (it will like the fact that the boost is held and 'well behaved')

The FPR simply makes it 'easier' for the fueling system to deliver the fuel the flash is demanding. If you are running out of fuel, then higher pressure will help. Are you? Durametric logs should tell. But with exhaust, flash, wastegates your fueling should be fine. My guess is a 5bar FPR will do nothing noticeable for you.

HI,At the beginning, I was at where you are now, trying to decide this stuff...This is my opinion and what I did after all my research......First,I do not think you need the waste gates with a 93 oct flash because the programmer[Tony,EPL] will have the boost controller electronically adjust the waste gates.Talk to EPL,Tony.....Some programs, like GIAC,tell you to adjust the waste gate rods tighter with there program...Its extra time and money to swap the w/gates.A 5bar is not needed at that level you are talking about because that is about max. boost you can run,,now... And once you catch the HP disease..lol.......You might upgrade your turbos to K24/18g and then you can also use a 5bar then......So,it is important to get a tuner, like EPL,that does a flash at your level and then when you upgrade/HP disease he can handle it and it will not be paying for a whole new program price.......Hope this helped,,Good Luck

My max injector duty cycle I have logged is 83% @ 4900rpm. Seems there is room to take the upgrade assuming that the new map would require about an extra 15% more fuel (as a guess) at 1.2bar max. If so this would rise to approx 95%, not quite maxxed out, but close!!!

Lemme guess, you recommend Tony or EPL?

AFAIK, there is no "program" that can overcome shortcomings in the wastegate spring. So it simply cannot hold the boost, no matter what the programming is calling for...

Again, AFAIK

wastegates are defiently worth upgrading on a k24s since they crack open way to early. i would also recommend getting a 5bar fpr on k24s with tune and boltons.

Hi,Thats the good thing about this site,,,Everyone gives there opinion or experiences to help each other..But before you make up your mind, especially with the 5 bar,I would make sure you talk to tuners to see IF they make a program to go with a 5 bar and stock K24's.....You will be suprised on you results and feed back from them in this.....

hmmm, i'm getting mine logged at Raven MS as we speak right now, 1.0 actuators ordered (shady seller sold me the k24/18g w/ stock wastegate that wouldn't boost high...) as well as brand new MAF... but i'm running intake/exhaust/header/ipd plenum/awe intercoolers/gt3tb/epl injectors, and Tony @ EPL told me that 5bar FPR is not necessary? i'm running his program too (paid extra for the custom tuned btw).

Factory wastegate springs can't effectively hold the 1.2 BAR most flashes ask for. The exhaust pressure forces the flapper open releasing some exhaust pressure needed for max power. The result is a very muddy power curve. Seems faster sometimes and slower other times.

Wastegates are definitely worthwhile on K24s and K24/18g. Period.

Hi,Yes and no,IMO...When I had the stock K24s and GIAC tune, before my K24/18s,GIAC recommends that you tighten up the stock waste gates by turning in the nuts on the rods,so they will hold the extra boost..It looks like you have a GIAC tune???...Ask Andrew or Jason there or call AWE and they will tell you that...My car with that mod hit and held 1.1 and peaks at 1.2 with no problem...There are not to many tuners that have a program for stock K24s and pump gas with 1bar springs that I am aware of,same with the 5 bar as I said above.....Just giving my info to try to help........

@Johnspeed I have GT28 turbos now, but went down the K24 path years ago. "Been there done that"

The wastegate spring will really wake up the car. Everyone that has done it will confirm this. You WILL feel the difference.

The problem is that at about 1.1 BAR the factory spring in the wastegate is too weak to hold the boost that is being requested by the ECU. It's really that simple. You need a stronger spring so that the ECU controls the boost, not the spring.

This was with K24s on an off the shelf GIAC K24 tune, exhaust and wastegates. Stock everyting else on 91 octane at 85 degrees. The car was noticeably faster on race gas in the "race" setting. Alas I never dynoed that combo. I am a big fan of GIAC.

Hey good info,,We all share and we all learn,,I guess when I made my first mod, from GIAC the flash, they told me the adjustment was all I needed with pump gas map...Back when I was stock and looking into flashes,I do not believe any one told me I needed it with there flash....Plus,I thought why would I spend money to do that with K24s when I should just go to K24/18s if I had to take them off and do a parts swap on them...Even though I am past that now,Thanks for sharing........

nevermind, i was trying to find out if the 5bar FPR is necessary if i've already done injector upgrades... wrong thread lol.
