have an 04 V8 Treg. Had it for one year with 11k miles. Overall, very well built, reliable etc. There has been some electronic gliches (seems like a common problem), but no major problems. Be ready for city mpg around 10-12. But like you said , it's a lot of bang for the buck. It was the Motortrend SUV of the year in 04. I couldn't justify spending another 20k for Cayenne S. You (or your ex) will be happy.

My wife has had the lowly V6 for over a year now and it's by far the best $35k I've ever spent on a car. It's one of the few SUVs that has adequate brakes and can steer out of its own way from the factory.

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but the Tourareg doesn't handle as well as the Cayenne, does it? I can't see how that is possible...therefore I'm not sure they should be considered the 'same' SUV, only the Porsche is $20k more...
I believe the t-reg beat the cayenne in the slolom and skid pad tests, but the margin was pretty small and probabaly entirely due to the tires that were on each.
I have an 04 v8 and couldn't love it more. I brought it up to the maine forest rally last weekend and had an absolute blast flogging it on mountain twisties and logging roads. It had no trouble keeping up with some pretty fast cars running between stages. I haven't had any issues with it, or a single complaint in almost 2 years. Be sure you get the pneumatic suspension though....

I had an 04 V8 with the premium + package and 19" wheels. I had no problems with it. The look and quality of the interior is better than the Cayene S. It does not handle as well as the S but the off road capability is better. Good bang for the buck. You shouldn't have any problems with the 40V Audi V8

..aren't the Suspension pieces on the Cayenne Aluminum, whereas on the VW, umm, not?

Stephen - really? I'm amazed by this, as I don't see the Touareg showing up in handling tests anywhere near the Cayenne - it just doesn't have the sporty reputation, I guess.
I really want to hear more, as I may be looking at pre-owned Cayenne turbos now - pre-owned because I'll let someone else take a huge depreciation hit, not me. I drove the CS at PDE and was overwhelmed by the handling ability, and I just seem to have a hard time thinking the Touareg can do it as well, although I've never tested it. Of course if I go Touareg instead of CT, I'll lose out on that blinding acceleration...
