Transmission Question
Transmission Question
When I shift from 1st to 2nd, I can feel the gears mesh up about half the time. Feels like the synchro is going out to me. The dealer service dept said this is normal on all TT's. Does anyone else have the same thing?
It is somewhat normal for our trannies. I would keep an eye on it. It has a tendency to become a little lazy feeling if you will when going into gear. Other times it will be crisp and direct. I believe some of it to be the cables rather than a shift rod.

Does the short shift kit help with this or is it still the same. And for those who have done the short shift, how hard is it to install.

I have the same problem. I also have problems when driving in stop and go traffic of the gear shift know being very difficult to pull out of 1st and 2nd gears. It's like it gets stuck in gear. Tech wants to pull trannie apart and possibly replace. Could there be any other causes of this problem.

Your shifter gets stuck in gear so you have to pull hard as hell to get it out?? It feels like I may break the shifter sometimes. If you have the same problem I feel much better

I've had the shifter getting stuck in gear thing on both my TTs....Happens more often on inclines or after parking car....Also, sometimes when I come to start the car, the clutch is so stiff and wont depress and really needs a lot of effort...
As long as your tranny doesnt pop out of gear while driving you should be fine - otherwise its time for a new tranny!!

Man I feel fortunate. I've never had any of these issues. In stock form, the tranny felt like butter. With the B&M and stock shift linkage, it felt notchy. But never got stuck or anything like that.
Now with the B&M and EVO shift linkage, it feels like butter again. Just shorter...
Maybe this is a function of tranny fluid temps? I've never had my car out in ambient temps below 75 degrees yet... So the tranny has never seen cool weather.
(Hopefully it will get below 75 degrees at some point during the day or night sometime real friggin soon!

It only happens when I am in stop and go traffic, otherwise, it is fairly smooth. I do mostly city driving and msindi mentioned he does as well so maybe that is the cause. Do you do a lot of city driving?

Trouble getting out of gear and balky upshifts can mean that the clutch is not totally dis-engaging. Hydraulic clutch cylinders can get air bubbles that reduce the travel of the throw-out bearing. Sometimes it helps to purge the air by pumping the clutch a few times. Also at high RPM the pressure plate fingers can vibrate against the throw-out bearing and push it back. This is due to crankshaft end play and other tolerances in the flywheel / pressure plate assembly. This also results in less throw out bearing travel when you depress the clutch.
After years of driving cars with hydraulic clutches I've gotten in the habit of shifting into neutral before stopping, then pumping the clutch pedal a couple of times before shifting into first gear. I also pump the clutch several times if I'm getting ready to try some fast shifting.
