Clutch question - Kevlar or Fiber Tough?

I am in the market for a new clutch for my 2004 996TT X50. I have a Softronic flash on it but otherwise it is stock.

I want to make sure what I put in will handle the extra power but still be driveable, I think the flash shortened the life of the stock clutch.

Thinking of a Clutch Masters Stage 3, but I see these listed two different ways, both supposedly "stage 3". One is with an "8 Puck Kevlar" and the other with "Fiber Tough".

Are they both Stage 3? Is one better than the other? I am going to stay with the dual mass flywheel and do not track the car. Want something comfortable to drive yet robust to handle a longer life.

Thanks!

fiber tough easy break in. the kevlar takes more time and you do not want to load it and have it slip.

Great question - I am in the same boat....Clutch Master Stage 3 - Which one? I have also been told to go with a GT2 setup? I wasn't aware of the difference between G@ clutch setup and a 996tt? Thoughts?

Hey,For what its worth.........I put a CM stage 2 which is the same as a Vivids CM stage 3 . I did not like it...Instant grab, hardly any modulation and solid engagement,no cush,,,,I know others swear by this set-up......I took it out after 500 miles or so and put a CM stage 1 in....Alot better to live with..If you do a search on clutches,I did a full review on this about a yr. ago....The stage1 does holds my K24/18g power...Its in the pressure plate mod which is the same for both....Just my input.....Good Luck

I have a RUF 550 Rturbo and a Sachs Stage 2 clutch was part of the conversion. Feels just like OEM (which I believe is made by Sachs also) and after 20K miles is still going strong with no slipping.

Thanks for the input. After speaking with a few Porsche mechanics they recommended going with the GT2 disc with the Sachs Sport/Race pressure plate, part number 883082999752. They cautioned about a change in the pedal, feel or engagement of any aftermarket set up and had good history on the set up they recommended and felt the Sport/Race pressure plate would do the job.

I was hoping to add a Milltek exhaust, buying the one for sale by Smooth Operator that is listed on this site, but he is MIA. If anyone knows how to reach him, let me know. I don't have enough posts to send a PM yet. With a cabrio, I am focusing on either the Milltek or Europipe 2 quiet as exhaust choices.

The Stage 3 kit that Clutch Masters does exclusively for us is Fiber Tough. Why I say exclusively, because if you order a Stage 3 from them or someone else, its a different part number and different setup.

Fiber Tough is strong like kevlar but less abrasive on the flywheel. This is why they use that material. Is this a good clutch? I used it on my 997TT with 760awhp in 2 TX miles, 5000miles of DD, 2 DE events, and a handful of 1/4 miles passes. It stills working.

Not sure what that part numbers is but the 999 plate is the one from sachs that has the most pressure. Milltek is good stuff, don't know why they are not used more.

Well Dan,Just going by what Louis at CM told me that' their' stage 2 clutch for Porsches is the exact same one as your stage 3...When I bought their stage 2 from them, which one of the members here bought it off of me, it was fiber tough also.......

Johnspeed, not true

Tim941 - yes the Fiber Tough is strong like kevlar, just not as abrasive to the flywheel surface.

From what I was told at CM,fiber tough is easier and faster to break in....and they said Porsche people prefer that because they do not want to spend a long time breaking it in????
