How much Horsepower is enough?
How much Horsepower is enough?
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts on this topic are. For many reasons I have not had much seat time in my car since the upgrade. Those of you with 600, 700 or more please chime in with your horsepower level and driving impressions. Then let me know if you think you have quenched your thirst for power or feel like you still want more.
I am thinking once you are at 700 to 750hp much more really isn't needed unless you are going to become a drag racing fanatic. Thoughts out there?

I stopped at just over 600rwhp(w91oct). The GT700 kit I had offered great power with very smooth delivery. I would want to strengthen engine internals before considering any more power. The car was great fun and worked very well on the street but would need significant suspension mods to manage any more power, but then it would be a monster and not a fun street/track car. It seemed that the 600-650 rwhp level was already overkill for the street. I really miss all that torque. My new GT3 provides a more balanced approach to performance, I really enjoy the N/A engine and lighter more optimized platform. Again, I really do miss all the power but as someone said, power does not always translate into performance.
Buddy, you would enjoy the GT3 a lot. However, it has no PSM or traction control, so with your highly aggressive driving style, you would find yourself sideways a lot and catching the car from going into the dirt... which I am sure you would thoroughly enjoy!
i have written them in the past but for you I will redo
buddy,
The turbo is probably the best all-around car. Great in the wet, fast in the dry but I felt the car was detached from the driver with the drivers aids, and the weight of the car. This was probably the impetus for most of my modifications. I was always trying to get the nimble feel out of the car and felt that I was able to improve the car but not achieve my ultimate goal. The gt3 is much harder to drive and at the limit it is far more fun and scary. The turbo would always just push through the turns while the gt3 feels like it's going to bite you in the *** if you really explore the limits. The challenge of driving the gt3 is what makes it really fun. The turbo however really taught me how to get use to high speeds on the tracks, and although I felt like my racing/driving ability had peaked with the car, I felt it was safer to learn on then the gt3. The Gt3 really is a car that should not be a choice that most should consider as an option Vs the turbo. Both cars appeal to a different part of the brain. Ironically I feel much safer in the turbo at 50 percent faster speeds and probably 100 percent faster speeds in the wet then the gt3. Gt3 is much harsher then the turbo with ps9's and the abs comes on much quicker (you would think that it would come on later but the weight of the car and the floating nature of the car causes the abs to kick in quicker)-

I have had big hp cars for several years now and enjoy the rush of speed. My Porsche is currently in the final stages of the EVO GT 800 upgrade. With the GT 750 I found the power delivery to be very smooth. We do have a bit more lag up here but still ... very happy. I really dd not do the GT 800 for more power ... I just wanted the internals to be toughened up. Of course a bit more power would not be argued ..
I would rather have the big hp turbo cars here in Denver. NA cars are castrated at this altitude. If I wanted a track car I would buy one strickly for that purpose. I want/like big HP highway crushers.
My Viper will be pushing 1000 crank HP on pump gas and my Gallardo will get a turbo conversion next winter ... if you have to ask why you would never understand.

I think there is a lot more to it than just hp. Vehicle weight and gearing play a huge part as well. Going purely on hp #s though, I would build a broad power banded 600hp well before building an 800+hp car that will ultimately result in a high peak # but much less enjoyable power band .
I guess one of things I am wondering is you guys with the 1000 hp + Vipers and Supra's can you really use all that power on the street or is it more for drag racing.
No Mercy you mentioned highway crushing, I guess once you are up to speed like 70 mph you can nail the throttle and get the rush of that 1000 hp Viper? I am not sure cause I have never been in anything like that.
Please enlighten me.
