Time to re-think 996TT pricing
Still though, I like the idea from Landjet. And I have an idea.
What if we all (I mean ALL of us here on 6speed - and we're many) post out our cars for sale... at pricing we think represents what these cars are really about. Not to sell really but to "market" the pricepoint of the 996TT.
Let's say
Cars in the current 30-40 range we start at 50 no less.
Cars in the current 40-50 range start at 60 no less.
Cars in the current 60 and up range bump 10k on all prices.
996 GT2 owners post out NEVER ever less than 100k (keep the magic) and never let go below 90k. It's a collector car no matter how you turn it.
It'd be fun to see what happens over the next 12 months.

Please don't, I haven't bought mine yet.

Couple of problems here, those that own want the higer price tags but those that are in the market see the 997TT coming down in price...
for this to work all Porsche sellers would need to adopt a similar strategy, or at least those with similar cars i.e. turbos, GT3, GT2, RS etc..etc..(kinda like cost fixing driving up prices therefor with the top market share holders creating the rest of that industry to meet the higher cost playing field)...even as such, buyers may then find cars like the C2, C4, and C4S an even more attractive buy with a larger delta to the turbo and GT2/3...and go for those forcing turbo sellers to again reduce their price...
In order to cost fix and do it so that it's optimized, the entire Porsche used car market would have to be on board, essentially driving the cost to purchase a used Porsche, regardless of model, at a higher starting point.

The 993TT is a collectable car and as such guys aren't going to drive them year round. Much more likely it becomes a weekend toy. A big part of this is due to the attachment of that car to the historical 911 (air cooled, floor mounted pedals, headlights, etc.) No matter how much we try and kid ourselves the 996TT will never be a collectable. First, it's water cooled. Second, it's the first of the new style - the headlights are the one thing most people say they dislike. Third, they sold a pile of them. So here you have a car that was made in higher numbers, breaks with tradition and will most likely have more miles/modifications due to the fact people actually drive them daily. I have 12 cars and my twinner is the first car that makes me think about selling all the others because it's just that good. However, if the 997's drop to the $50k range I'm likely to make a switch to get the latest and greatest. Odds are that your average 993TT owner isn't thinking the same way.
While it is a bit depressing if you are an owner, it is only a problem when the time comes to sell. I paid a bit more for mine because I wanted the cleanest, lowest mileage car I could find (I knew I would be keeping it for a while). All of this aside, most people out there in the world don't know the difference between a 996 and 997! People think my car is new and can't believe it is a 10 year old car.
Enjoy them for what they are: awesome cars that will beat most anything on the road.

most of our cars wont be worth a dime because we all track them...how much are you guys willing to pay for a car that has been thrashed or we think that it has been thrashed on a track ????

bottom line is that a c2, c4 either 996 or 997 model will never become classic's!
the 996 turbo is somewhat superseded by the 996 gt2 but in my eyes the turbo is a soon to be classic.
this is what drives prices back up..
I also cannot believe the power/handling capabilities these cars have for the relatively small investment. drive a boxster for a day and you'll miss your turbo like hell!
i recently drove a 997tt and whilst the interior was refreshing and the overall new car look and feel was pleasant im not sure i would double my car payments to be sitting in a 997tt over a 996tt.
in actual fact the 996tt felt a little more raw and direct compared to the 997tt.

There was only one '07 that hit the $50's recently in 'below avg' condition with 72k miles. More than likely salvage history or visible damage. Either way you know it was beat up. The average price for an 07 at auction is still a little over $75k.
