Time to re-think 996TT pricing
i bought my 996tt at the worst possible time. i paid dearly for a modded car. and ive been paying dearly. but at the end of the day, to me, it was worth it
but while others were waiting around to save an extra couple of grand in exchange for sacrificing time, i had my nicely modded turbo at 24 and enjoyed the hell out of it... at 24 years old..
i wouldnt sell my car for what most 996tt's are going for now though...
it has too much sentimental value for me

The issue is there are a lot of cars out there that can be had in the $40,000 to $50,000 range.
Dodge Viper
BMW M6
C6 Corvette Z06
Toyota Supra
997 911 Carrera
Lotus Elise
What amazes me is how much value the 993 Turbo has retained.

The 996TT isn't there yet - and, who knows, may never be. Cars can be funny that way. A nice 965 3.3 can be had around $40kish; a nice 965 3.6 will be more like $65-70k+. Yet, you're essentially talking about the same car, similar MSRPs, 2-3 MYs apart. The market of buyers and sellers (including dealerships, auction houses, etc.) dictate the current fair market values.
A relatively small group of owners won't be able to appreciably affect values for these cars, IMHO. They're not exactly limited editions. Sure, owners can set high asking prices... but you'll just get offers you consider to be "low-ball," or it'll just sit and sit unsold.
The 996TT market actually has been drifting upward over the last couple years, but that's after the huge collapse following the credit crisis, real estate collapse, and recession. If you bought a 996TT in mid-2009, you could probably sell in mid-2011 at a profit.
Just my $0.02 as someone who's been watching these closely for awhile.
I'm the kind of people who just enjoy what I have. Will I sell my car for a better car? not really at this moment! Do I worry about the price-tag of my car? not really! The car is priceless until you put in on the market.
my thoughts exactly!
I find it amazing what you get for the money when you buy a 996tt. These cars still after 10 years (for '01s) are amazing performers. This is why I bought one. I think they are totally undervalued cars and some of that has to do with how they were mass produced. There are quite a few of them out there. I think as the economy recovers the prices on these cars will creep back up a bit or at the very least not depreciate further. These cars hit very high on the "bang for the buck" scale. I love my car and to me it is worth far more than I paid for it.
Just out of curiosity, when you guys quote the amount that you spent on your car are you including the sales tax in the figure or not? After all, sales tax on a 55K car is about $4K so not exactly chump change. In my case, I avoided going through a dealer and bought from a private party to avoid the sales tax thus saving about $4K.
Still though, I like the idea from Landjet. And I have an idea.
What if we all (I mean ALL of us here on 6speed - and we're many) post out our cars for sale... at pricing we think represents what these cars are really about. Not to sell really but to "market" the pricepoint of the 996TT.
Let's say
Cars in the current 30-40 range we start at 50 no less.
Cars in the current 40-50 range start at 60 no less.
Cars in the current 60 and up range bump 10k on all prices.
996 GT2 owners post out NEVER ever less than 100k (keep the magic) and never let go below 90k. It's a collector car no matter how you turn it.
It'd be fun to see what happens over the next 12 months.

so i paid $68,500 for my car back in January 2008.
since then i've dumped 35-40 grand into the car (about 7/8 sets of tires included)
