Check Engine Light

I noticed that my 2002 911tt was idaling a bit high today. When I pulled into the garage, the check engine light turned on. Problem, is I am about 180 from the dealership.. Should I tow it to get it checked?

Before paying for a near 200 mile tow, I would get my hands on a durametric and read the codes, might be something that you can drive through. If you are 180 miles from your shop/dealer, the cable will pay for itself by avoiding 1 unnecessary tow. Good luck, keep us posted.

There is a local shop that works on German cars. He probably at least has one of the code readers, Right?

Very likely, even the code scanners Auto Zone lends out will read the codes for you, I am just assuming you dont have one of those near you either, you are in the middle of area-51, correct?

I'm in a small town. Plenty of auto-zones. Just not in a place where I would trust anyone to work on a 996 TT. Should I just run by auto zone?

I would, if it's not too far. They will have you leave your drivers license most likely, I would drive a different car to pickup the reader.

Checked the oil cap.. It was on tight. Car is still idaling a little high. Should I not risk driving it to the dealership ?

I would call a few people who know more than we do and see what they say. I would guess most will play it safe, but it might be something that you can drive with. Anyways, that is what I would do.

As Lauren indicated in the Rennlist post:

Possible fault cause
♦ Throttle is jammed
♦ Leaks in intake air system

I would check for leaks. Driving the car should not be a problem...blinking CEL's are bad.

Just spoke with my Porsche service advisor. He told me to clean the mass air flow meter and my H&K air filter. Does anyone have instructions on how to remove and clean properly ?
