CA Smog - Questions

Car needs to be smogged, lots of mods since the last smog. A few questions.

Best to install stock exhaust or should I just install the 200 cell cats that came with my speed tech 2.5 ?

I obviously will inquire with my shop as to where to take it, assuming there will be some flexibility in relation to the visual.

Rear O2 sensors are disabled with the current tune, I assume this will come up as a red flag ? Will I need to have Todd @ Proto send me another tune with them enabled ?

Car passed with flying colors last time around when it was stock.

I appreciate the feedback.

The visual shouldn't be a problem unless they are very ****. Most don't know what they are looking at with a p-car and generally focus on the engine compartment. They will check the exhaust if it fails the sniffer. The O2 sensors disabled will automatically fail the test. They need to be enabled which means you have to put the cats on to pass. There can be no check engine light on.

Mine passed with Miltek100 and 02 sensor switched on. Visual was ok but performance was great. Your Speedtech should be great unless your Proto tune is rich for the 18G setup. Good luck and keepnus posted.

How do you like the Speedtech 2.5 so far?

I found it best to chat with a few smog check techs beforehand. You can get a pretty good sense of who will go the extra mile to help your car pass, and who don't really care whether you pass or not. The process and computers have gotten to the point where very little discretion is given to the techs -- but they can still help. Good luck!

To be safe I'd do it with the stock exhaust installed. My local shop took care of everything for me. I drove my car down shop, they took off my Tubi system, installed the stock exhaust, drove it over to a close Smog shop (with the rear clip off), got it smogged, brought it back to their shop, put my Tubi back on and called me when they were done. Dropped the car off at 10:00am picked up at 2:00pm the same day.

Hassle free for me and it passed, well I did have to get my stock system to the shop and then go back later to pick it up. They are close by, I just threw it in my truck. Not sure if the box would fit in the car.

Very well said.. I have a tech friend and we just spoke of this yesterday..
He mentioned that in this great Cali state of ours. If you transplant a motor from another country ..and want it check via BAR... They will automatically fail you- based on the serial of the block ( we were discussing Honda - Type R motors in a transplanted in USA car)...even if the smog checks out and are with in limits!!

have your tuner send you a stock file and install the 200 cell cats.

I've always found it is a good idea to get your car smog checked right after making modifications. They will do it without sending the results to the state. This generally arms you with data on your situation far, far in advance of having to go do it with the 30 day notice or whatever it gives. Then you can have peace of mind in the future and have plenty of time to do whatever you have to do to make your car pass before you toss all those stock parts in the dumpster.

Not saying you did this but I've seen a ton of people who have. Then they get the notice to go test and fail and are in a spot. Better to spend the $30 up front to get tested and know where you stand months or years in advance.

I'm not on the stock injectors ....

I assume this may not be a good idea ?

You will almost certainly fail with larger injectors and a stock tune. You're just going to have to go in for a test only and find out where you stand before you go for the one that goes to the state.

What you do not want to do is fail and have to retest. One, that's a pain in the butt to do quickly and I've heard but don't know for a fact that once you fail you are quite often put on the yearly exam schedule. But again, this may be BS, its just what I've been told.

I appreciate the feedback.

Chances are you won't have any issues with the visual inspection. Most shops only care if you can pass the sniff test. Speed Tech 200 cells cats will pass easily. Disabled O2 sensors will fail. Best bet is flash back to a stock tune and drive it for an hour or so before the test. Flash back to you HP tune after you pass. JSP idea of taking a pratice smog test after each engine mod is a good idea. That way you're not in a panic when you get the test notice. You don't want to get on the state fail list.

Wanted to follow-up, exchanged an email with Todd @ Proto, no need to load another tune, current tune shows Ready for the rear o2's even though I don't see CEL with the cats removed. He recommended doing a test smog check before the real deal, just as others had recommended above.

I will try the 200 cell cats, if I have problems with the test, I will put the stock exhaust on and test again.

Thanks for all the feedback, hope this goes smooth.

We have seen modified Porsche's pass the emissions test as long as the oxygen sensors are giving feedback and the catalytic converters are functioning (even 100 cell cats).
You will be given a static mode test instead of the loaded mode test due to the AWD.
If you would like to have us run a pre-emission test for you at our Anaheim location, send me an email.

I know this post is a bit old, but how did the smog test go with the 60 lbs injectors?

Thanks,
Shawn
