check engine light , rough idle then dead. Help!

driving the car yesterday and had to get it towed.

Here are the facts of the whole deal.

Two days ago installed Speedtech exhaust I touched the O2 sensors and wiped them off because I saw some white residue on them . I wiped with my bare hands. Not sure if this was a wrong move to start with. Installed the exhaust and the 2 sensors on each side . To tell you the truth I also think I switch the sensors when I put them back on.

Check engine light came on first but car drove fine. Drove the car for about 30 miles and then started sputtering, then would no go kinda like in limp mode.
made it to the fwy exit and died. I was already pulling over so now being on the side of the road , I put it back in park started it rough idle and died. Called AAA
and now it sits in my drive way . Would the O2 sensors putting them on in the wrong spot cause all this havic? I hope thats all it is . I havnt read the code yet to see what it says . This just happened last night . Any advice would help Thanks !

You need to get the codes read out and post them first. WE could all be guessing unless you give us an area to think about.
Do you have access to a Durametric?

you probably switched them.... the grey wire should be furthest away from the turbos... the black wire o2 should closest to turbos... did you plug them in on top? did you disconnect them when screwing them in or did you just bind the wires as you screwed them into the exhaust? you could have damaged the o2s....

"the vehicle not to turn over"

Do you mean the engine does not even try to rotate when you turn the key, or do you mean the engine spins over but wont start

Yes, I plugged them in on top . Did not disconnect when screwing these back in , just twisted the wires . I am going to switch it back hopefully the o2 is still ok . But right now it wont start. It acts like it wants to but it wont idle it will die right away if it starts.

The engine rotates but when it starts it dyes right away it will idle for about a 1-2 secs. I havent switched the wires back yet I think the O2 sensor wires are backwards , but I find it hard to believe that this would not allow the engine to start , maybe there is a limp mode? I cleared the error code .

If you are just going to fight correct repair info then why do you ask for help? You have one known problem and until you fix it, why keep asking questions? Plus if you just let the lead wires twist, they are likely toast too.

Fix what you know is wrong and THEN lets see what else happens.

Fuel pressure, get the pressure checked, you know you have a spark as it kick over, sounds like the fuel pump pipe could be split. At least you will know if you have it checked out.
BTW you car will idle without cats fitted. I had mine running on stands for over 30 minutes without an exhaust after some major work having been done to the engine. Eventually the Cell came on but it still ran and started .
If your car wont start at all, I'm not sure it is directly related to cats, as when the car is cold it starts in open loop anyway. perhaps you have damaged the DME with those crossed wires, but I wouldn't know anything at all about that.

To rule out pump issues and pump relays I would start with fuel pressure testing.

thanks sunnyside ,

taking to dealer this morning to get it checked out . I am the second owner and the original owner has taken to the dealer religiously so I figured if I ever sell the car it would be a nice track record that its always been dealer maintained .
