Changing out Bose stereo system!

Guys i own a 2004 turbo cabriolet and i am thinking of doing Boston Acoustics pro60se's in the front and a shallow p310" Rockford Fosgate in a custom box on the floor in the passenger side. The deck will be a Pioneer z930, what do you guys think about my choices? I have researched far and wide for a shallow sub
which there are not many out there that have a 3.5" thickness to put where i am putting it. If anyone has other ideas of where to put a sub i am all ears.

The suggestion came to put it in the trunk but there are two firewalls in that car and i think the bass would not be near as good then putting inside the car somewhere. thanks for listening!

Earthquake SWS-6 or SWS-8 or SWS-10. They all have mounting depths of under 3 inches and have excellent subwoofer capability. If you don't need it to shake others around you, you can put the SWS-6 in the doors and then cross the over around 80 Hz with excellent results. Just need high quality fronts

Do you think the Boston Acoustics Pro60's a good quality speaker?

I also own a 04 Turbo Cab.. just replaced the deck and amp but looking at sub options as well. Not sure on combinations but give these guys a look... specifically the turbo speaker option with box when you search through the site.

Best of luck,

Hey Bryan, it's so good to see someone else that has my same car! What are you thinking of doing? A local shop suggested putting in a shallow Rockford Fosgate custom fiberglass enclosure by the feet of the passenger side. I am starting out with Boston's up front and nothing hooked up in the rear because 99% of the time there are only two people in the car! Good luck with your car.

There are many options to consider in headunits, speakers and amps.

I also had the Bose system in my 996, and I ended up replacing everything. I went with Focal PolyGlass speakers. I had the dashboard speakers replaced with 3-ways, the rear speakers replaced wtih co-axials and the door speakers replaced with 6-1/2" speakers in a custom enclosure. I had the Bose subwoofer box removed and a custom enclosure built in the back for a single Focal 10" subwoofer. Every speaker is hidden in the OEM locations, so everything looks stock. The amp I chose is a Focal 4-channel amp. It's only 400 watts, but that's plenty of power in a car this small. I chose the Kenwood DNX-6960 for my headunit. Overall, the sound improvement was very dramatic, and I'm very pleased with the results.

Good luck - you won't regret this upgrade!

Mine does not have Bose sub and the only place to put one is on the floor somewhere using a shallow subwoofer.
Speakers I am only doing 6.5 in front and tweeters in dash and not putting anything in the back for now. In going to see how it sounds.

The fiber optic system (the MOST ring) was installed on the 996 starting in 2003. The 2002 models still use traditional copper wires for all connections.

I would think you could keep the PCM headunit and just upgrade the amp and speakers, but I'm not sure. I know that the speakers are the weakest link in the system, so doing this should provide a significant upgrade in sound quality. However, upgrading the PCM unit too would bring lots of new, modern features like upgraded sat nav, bluetooth, iPod connectivity, Sirius/XM, etc.

Yes my head unit's screen went dark awhile ago. The sound still works but nothing else works and to change it out by the dealership they want huge money for the same outdated unit. I am hoping the new components will sound good. I think it will so wish me luck!

You are correct to junk the whole thing. All the stock systems suck. Does the cab have the shelf in the back were the Bose subwoofer sits. As mentioned above, that would be a good place to have a custom subwoofer enclosure built. Looks stock and you save your back seats (not that they are that useful). Get an amp that has a seperate subwoofer channel of get a seperate subwoofer amp. They need alot of power to work properly. The new aftermarket double din units have tons of great features that no stock unit comes close to.

Duane thanks for the advice! Actually there is no sub in my system and there is no room behind the seats because it is a cabriolet. So my only option is doing a shallow sub on the passenger side on the floor in the foot area up front. They tell me i will only lose about 6"
of room so that's not bad. Yes i am putting in the pioneer Avic 930, i was looking into a Kenwood 9980 but i got a good deal on the Pioneer and the price difference was not appealing to me to go for the Kenwood. I am super excited about having updated features to play with!

I've heard the Pioneer is very user friendly. I think you can even have the Porsche logo come up when you turn it on. Too bad about the subwoofers. I'l hate to loose 6"inches anywere (except my waist).
