Turbo upgrade, someone push me over the edge...

Well, I'd like some honest feedback. I purchased a 2001 996tt from a 6speed member w/ exhaust, UMW tune, bosche DV's, & HR coilovers. I'm contemplating either a stereo upgrade or turbo upgrade. I've done some research and have been scouring some porsche message boards. I have a few turbo options in mind, one of which is UMW stage 2a (I believe it is). Goal is a street friendly 600-650 hp on pump gas. I'd like to keep cost down w/ out cutting any corners.

I need some of you veterans to push me over the edge and or ground my expectations.

I am no verteran but my father has a EVOMS GT700 upgrade on his car. I have gotten a fair amount of time behind the wheel of the car as well as the older EVOMS GT605 kit. First time I got in the car(keep in mind never had much experience with anything fast, I was 15 at the time) I almost blacked out. Then this second upgrade "supposedly" around 600whp or so that car is crazy fast. It is such a joy of a car to drive. Might not be the fastest but to drive the car is such a fun experience you can not get enough of the car. You want to keep driving for days on end in the car. Roll on throttle with the car will brake loose some in 4th gear around 100mph.

While 600-650hp with hybrid turbo is achievable is will be expensive as just bolting on new turbos will not be the end of the this slippery slope. A new tune, large IC and intake, new clutch set up, possible larger injectors/fuel delivery system. Pump gas in Cali also presents a limiting factor. 91 craptane just doesn't cut it. Unless you can find a reliable source of higher octane pump gas.

i'm not a vet, either per se, but.. i've had an x50 car and now have a car with the k16 hybrid turbo's and while i'm not at all certain which i prefer, a couple of things i know to be true.

i wouldn't want a stock k16 car. the hybrid k16/24 is the best of both worlds for nearly instant power on tap, and the stock k24 is much more of a rush as the power, once the turbo's spool, is more explosive, as the k16's are pretty much always "on". under hard throttle, i mean.

it's tough choice, but if you're running stock 16's now, if i were you, i'd go for hybrids, or 24's waayyy before messing with the POS sound system we've got. because trust me, sound will be less imporatnt once you've got the car flashed and with upgraded turbos!

but a sound system upgrade is on the top of my upgrade list also. still trying to work around this stupid sounding MOST system they installed in MY '03. the analog sytem in my "02 sounded MUCH better!

go with new turbos. you won't be sorry.. seriously.

btw edit: fellow 6'er Sambott has some *****in k16 hyrbids turbos that they sell out of speed gallery here. if you hit him up, i'm sure he'd be glad to help educate you further, he really knows his sh8t. this is an an unpaid endorsement.

I may be a new Porsche turbo owner but have owned several previous modded turbo cars. The sentence above is a paradox and not possible IMHO especially with a Porsche. As the previous poster stated, it's a slippery slope once you go down the path of upgrading turbos as you have to beef up the supporting infrastructure he mentioned as well.

My advice would be to stick to the stereo upgrade and enjoy the tunes.

PS: Contemplating a stereo upgrade vs. a turbo upgrade strictly related to whether you have 3-4K on hand or 10-15K on hand - I am being generous with the estimates of course.

i'm pretty sure you could upgrade turbo's along with gt2 i/c's, wastegates, and dv's for maybe what? 6k, installed, or fairly close if you're picking up deals? no?

that vs listening to today's "lousy" music!? that's a no brainer for me.

Go with turbo UG! Much more fun than stereo, imo...

I dont know if you mean 600-650 crank or wheel hp. Of course crank would be easier. You could just add a set of 24/18g or A28s +/- a 5 bar to the mods you already have and be above 600 crank. If you wanted 650 crank just add injectors and loose the 5 bar. If you mean 600 + wheel hp on pump you will need some additional supporting mods (like TB, plenum, intake piping, intake, ICs, ect...) or just go with race gas and injectors.

I was thinking on the same wave length. Around 6k +-. Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't done much research into IC's but I'll certainly look into an oem route. Are they bolt on, or is there conversion work?

I was referring to Crank! 600-650 crank. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Exactly what I was thinking, slap some turbos on, 5 bar and a reflash and get ready to make a clutch, flywheel change shortly there after. If I were to get bored of that, injectors would follow.

K16 billets with Wgs, a 5 bar, and a good tune can be done for around $3.2k as a package...
problem is your in Cali and your on 91...

If you do bigger turbos you need a big fuel system... then ICs. , Intake to open them up. etc etc. its mote then just slapping on big turbos and ur done...
