If this report is true the 997 turbo will use the 3.8 liter 997 motor. That kinda sucks because it will not be able to handle the type of mods the 996 turbo motor does.

Anyone else hear anything?

Gary (Fl) is infamous around these parts
"Meanwhile, the success of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet, re-introduced late last year after a long hiatus, appears to have cemented its place in the Porsche line-up. The new model, revealed (right) with a hard-top in place, is rumoured to run a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 480bhp – up 60bhp on today’s model. However, Porsche is also working on an S version with a 525bhp version of the same engine."

So I guess that I will stay with my 996TT since it has more HP than the new S that is coming out.

998TT hurry up!!!

Why do you think it will not be able to handle the mods?

Low compression 3.8...

I am sure it will handle some mods but not nearly the amount of the 996 turbo motor which was based on the racing GT1 motor.

Buddy,

According to this thread the 997 GT3 and turbo/GT2 models will still be based on the GT1 motor.

Buddy,

To make a 3.6 L into a 3.8 L all they have to do is use a 102 mm piston and liner in place of a 100 mm piston and liner.

Yes, they use same case as the TT now. They will just change the liners and pistons. It is not the 997 motor.

Yes, I am starting to hear that the GT1 based motor will be in the 997GT3 too, in lieu of the much rumored 3.8 wet sump motor...

well not sure what you mean by 3 index oil pump...it will be like the current motor with dry sump, lightened pistons and valves, titantium rods, GT1 crank and the 964 now made in spain block. Just like the current 996 GT3 version w/ perhaps different engine mapping and a little more displacement ? I think it will still be 3.6. After all, the RGT puts out 400hp at the crank with the 3.6 motor and different ecu map, ect.

Rocket,

This is not a flame. The GT1 motor really isn't that special other than the oil pump. In racing trim it produced 600 hp. Yes, it had titanium rods, pistons were not that special and current GT3 crank is superior.

Yes, eight years ago it was special.

still pretty special in current Porche Cup competition. The 997 GT3 Cup's basically use the same motor...

I BELIEVE the GT1 motor was developed from the stock (at that time) motor, at least the case. It had the dry sump. I think it was even stamped with a 964 casting number.

The Turbo motors are built on thier own line at the factory.

The GT3 Cup and the GT1 are not even close. Well the case is. Here is a GT1 oil pump. The GT3 has a two index pump. Cost of a GT3 Cup pump approx $1,400.00. Cost of a GT1 oil pump about $6,000.00.

GT1 Pump
