Brian went on about the details quite a bit, but the bottom line is it is supposedly very strong now.
Yep. It's a 3.167 1st gear like a Cup Car, which is way better for your powerband than the 3.818 that is standard. 2nd gear is also taller and it's much wider than was originally spec'd on your vehicle. It should serve you well.Originally Posted by Dr_jitsu
I think so. It is a heavy duty Euro GT2 mainshaft, does that ring a bell?Brian went on about the details quite a bit, but the bottom line is it is supposedly very strong now.

I have pretty much gotten everything, replacement shaft, 1-4th straight cut gears, steel syncros. Correct me if I am wrong, but the other option is the 997 set up; this is fully aftermarket/race car set up.
Just to clarify: you're not doing lower-toothcount (i.e. stronger) angled-cut gears, but instead you went fully to straight-cut gears?Originally Posted by Dr_jitsu

You will know when u drive it if they are straight cut gears on 1-4 because they will be much louder (gear noise) when in those gears than before.

Straight-cut gears are distinctive.
From Matt's description, it sounds like the lower-toothcount/beefier angled-cut gears are somewhere in-between stock and straight-cut for sound...
The mainshaft with 1st and 2nd gears that I describe are an OEM replacement GT2 mainshaft, that would be helical gears with standard toothcounts. I have no idea what 3rd and 4th gears Brian used. He may have bought them from me, but he buys so many gears I don't recall what I've sold to him in the last couple of months. The mainshaft was unique so it stands out in my memory. He buys gears from me several times a month so it all kind of blurs together, especially since I don't take every order that comes through our facility.

Interesting. So 1st and 2nd will be helical, stock-toothcount gearsets - is it correct to presume they're no stronger than the stock 1st and 2nd, then? I saw you mention the ratios are different, to make them more usable - so that's obviously an advantage.Originally Posted by GTgears

3rd and 4th we don't know, might even be straight-cut gears, but then back to helical stock gears for 5th and 6th?
Sounds like an interesting gearbox setup.

No, they are stronger. The mainshaft is not US OEM but a beefier Euro mainshaft that sometimes is OEM.Originally Posted by c32AMG-DTM

That quote appears to state the 2nd gear is wider, so it'll be stronger even though it's using a stock-toothcount helical design (from the cross-section, it sounds like the teeth won't be wider but they will be deeper, making them stronger). Thanks - that's what I missed.Originally Posted by Dr_jitsu

PM sent. Pretty funny that this got rehashed on thanksgiving one year later. Unless maybe I missed something and it was just a joke. Try to avoid those pies Jitsu. Happy Thanksgiving.
