Shifted into third and CRUNCH!

Went to get some dog food tonight (pooches deserve a Thanksgiving too) and on my way home was doing a 2nd-3rd gear pull, shifted into third and CRUNCH....something broke.

I have 3 towing services on speed dial, but would feel bad calling on Thanksgiving eve, put the car in 4th, cruised at 60 in the slow lane, once in my neighborhood was able to get the car home using 2nd.

There was a loud rattling noise the whole way.

Sooo, figured I broke 3rd gear (tach was climbing w/ no power being put down during the CRUNCH).

Any advice/experience? How much of a repair bill should I get ready for?

Thanks.

You lost 3rd gear like I did before I started my motor build.

The noise you are hearing is all of the gear pieces bouncing around in your trans. This is just some of the chunks GBox found.

Price varies on what all broke (I broke a lot and possibly the same as you sadly). I only had to drive 150-200 yards before I parked mine at my parents. I was on this straight away right by their house. When you try to shift it even with the car in the next few days the shifter will be hard to get out of or in a gear. It felt fine when it had a ton of heat in it, but a week later when I was loading it on the trailer to take to BL I had to use both hands to push it out of 2nd.

Sorry to hear Sean.

Hope you all have a good Thanksgiving. I can imagine the wife is cooking an awesome dinner for you all! I've lose 12lbs in the last 2.5 months with quitting smoking and going to the gym. Now that fat is going away I want the muscle to come so "Swole Powell" doesn't make me look like "Out of shape Powell"! LOL! Tomorrow I plan on gaining some of it back LOL!

I am figuring on a $3k bill....am I being too optimistic?

Wife has been cooking for 1.5 days....we had 10, that is right, 10 lbs of butter in the refrigerator!!

I asked her "are you trying to kill me sweetie? You know I don't have life insurance." She said "I need the butter for the pie crusts." hmmmm..

Then someone reminded me that she could have taken out a policy w/ out my knowing about it.

Thats why I stay fat even though I do crazy cardio (cross fit w/ outs followed by 10 minutes on the heavy bag, got a new versa climber too).

My ***** Jui jitsu students are all trying to pull a dick tuck on Fridays training!

Damn...very sorry to hear the news!

I hope the repair is more affordable than you expect, although we know that is rarely the case.

Thanks, Chad. Looks like all the civility in ATP is paying dividends

0299....the pies are still cooling, however I took a sweet potato, drowned it in this sugar/butter mix my wife was using for something. In fact I was taking a bite of the sweet potato, tilting my head back, and actually ladling it straight in, yum.

Depends on what your mechanic charges, but could be anywhere from $2500-$5k IMO if nothing is broken but the third gear. 3rd gear should be about 1k.

I have some gears from D33PBLU that weren't necessary during my rebuild I can take a look and see if 3rd is in good shape if you'd like. I know the 2nd wasn't usable, however I think I have 2-3-4-5 and a mainshaft.

Thanks Henry. I have someone else who has the gears. They are at the shop that worked on his car.

If they are no longer there, I will take you up on your offer.

Sorry to hear of the breakage!

Do you think there was anything different about the shift that may have contributed or just a cumulative effect of a lot of power put on the tranny?
