Drive train sound help

I noticed that when I take my car into a parking garage and start driving around in 1st gear for a while, it will start this screeching kind of whining metallic sound from the drive train or something. The sound will disappear when I push the clutch in however. I can then engage 1st gear and drive a bit again, and it will eventually start up again. It's never immediate, it's more after having driven in 1st for a few seconds or minutes and almost always after having gone up a ramp or incline then reaching the top and driving/idling forward while still in gear.

Any idea what this is? It doesn't seem to be harmful, but it concerns me obviously.

I will have the dealer take a look and fix under warranty if there's something to be fixed, but I want to go into the dealer with an educated guess as to what it is.

Just stay out of parking garages...

Does the sound start at any specific rpm? Does it stop or change if you accelerate in 1st gear?

No specific rpm does it start but it does change if you accelerate. I'm pretty sure it's drive-train related.

Are you having steering symptoms ? Power steering fluid leaks ( ask me how I know and remember Ray M's burned Turbo ) have been known to happen which affects clutch hydraulics on the same circuit .

Regarding the parking garage, I am guessing that, with the very short story heights, you are hearing sounds that occur all the time but can only hear them better due to the reverberation of the concrete grage structure in close proximity of the car.

Regarding the sound, I would hedge a bet that it is not transmission or drivetrain related. I would guess it is either the power steering pump or the serpentine belt slipping.

I'm having no power steering leaks or any issue that I can tell.

The noise is not normal. I've heard it outside of garages too, but it's just easier to hear in a garage and also, it happens more often after going up an incline.

The sound stops when I depress the clutch. That's why I'm guessing drive-train or clutch related. A belt or steering pump wouldn't stop immediately at that point each time.

Guy at Renntech suggested a possible clutch release bearing...

The sound is quite loud and definitely beyond normal.

Thanks for helping me here guys.

Some Turbos have the " rusty " throw out bearing problem ( ask me how I know ). Main symptom for that is trouble getting out of gear to neutral ( with clutch pushed in ) when rolling to a stop.

Hmm...

Mine seems to work ok. It's just that odd sound.

Just glad I'm still in warranty.

High pitched whine that goes away when the clutch is depressed sounds like the power steering pump. Check the fluid level.

Is the sound a steady "tone", or does the tone change with rpm? Also, is there any cycling of the sound, or is it a steady whine?

It is a clutch throw out bearing.

It is a leak in the power steering hydraulic system. I am having the same problem but it could not be duplicated when I brought it into the dealer. It used to be very loud, now only a very faint whistle - like a belt screeching. It disappears when you depress the clutch.
