OH you have to love some car salesmen

OH you have to love some car salesmen... Some of them are just so smart and just so honest.....
So I have this deal going on this 997 and I am talking to one of the salesmen from the dealership. I ask him to describe to me the condition of the car seeing how he is standing right in front of it and I am not. I ask if there are any bumps, nicks, chips or anything to be seen.... He assures me that the car is flawless and then he proceeds to tell me how it has been a single owner car and that this very dealership has done all the service work on the car and it has a flawless history with no problems. OH REALLY!!!!!
Well I cannot say that the car is less pristine than he describes and I bet it is in great shape seeing how it has less than 20k on it; it does appear to be mint from the detailed foto's..... But as far as its life history I get nothing but lies and he is just toooooo dumb to even think I will figure out he is lying..
Now it is bate him time.... I ask him to go over the service history with me... Well I guess he cannot do that because of confidentiality reasons... I then ask him a bunch more questions before I pull the rug out from under him. Their own web site has the car facts page right on it and it shows 3 owners not one; plus the car spent its entire life on the opposite coast before it came to them; I think his credibility is lacking....
GRRRRRRRR And YES FOLKS THIS IS WHY buying a used car can suck!!!!!

Please feel free to insert all the bad jokes you want about used car salesmen and lawyers below this post! At least that way I might get a laugh out of this process...

Why would he lie to you if we all know that this is public info, and before you buy the car there is a bunch of disclosures they need to present to new owner.
He might have not done his homework before presenting the car to you. Isn't this possible?

That is what I first thought... But I clearly asked him several questions that he could just not mistake...

I am still pressing forward to see if I can make a deal on this car. Just not with that salesman. This car is almost everything I want in a Porsche without custom ordering a new one myself. The things it does not have I am sure I will not care about one single bit if I were to climb inside.

I had the same experience with several salesmen...you figure they are in the business and could give you honest info, but all they care about is the sale. I had one whip out a paint meter, show me how to use it and swore the car was never repainted. Well, I used it and determined the whole front end including the doors were repainted. Confirmed it by finding overspray in the door jambs and around the gas cap. What a waste of 3hrs (1.5 hours to and back from the dealership).

Shoulda posted his name and at which dealership. Those types of a$$hats are sure to be avoided! But it must have been kinda fun to make the jerk look like an idiot at the end.

There's a reason that people like that sell cars...(no offense if you are one)...a couple IQ points higher than necessary for daily helmet wearing...

Most likely not, but it's worth noting... Are you absolutely sure he was looking at the same car as you? Maybe he's just an idiot. If they are a Porsche dealership (I assume they are judging by your post stating they do P-Car maintenance), I'm sure they have more than one 997.

Just a thought...

It is interesting to see you go on and about his ignorance while misspelling words yourself. I manage a dealership and have found it to be just like any other business, some good and some bad.

It wasn't a "comeback", we're not in high school, it was a simple observation.

I'm with OP on this one, spellchecking on or off the consensus is clear. As far as I have experienced both in the high end and used car segment the only reason car salesmen have work is because people want cars and put up with going through the process of dealing with them because it's simply a necessity. Sad but true. I am sure there are the odd exception though, but I'm an optimist.

Funny salesguy story:
Went to a big dealer of a domestic brand that had a nice Pcar sitting with some track mods. Went there firm on buying it if it just passed an over-rev readout and if there was nothing seriously wrong with it. First they couldn't find the car. Spent about 45 minutes in total before they finally figured out where they had it. Got to look it over, went over car fax. Told the guy I'll take it and I'm willing to pay down deposit to show I'm serious, and I'll follow through if it just passes an inspection. The independent motorsport shop to do this was less than 3 miles away, literally on the other side of the freeway.
- Ok, says the salesman, but I have this doctor who already told me on the phone he wants to buy it.
- Well in that case, I said, look that up and let me know, you can call me later and let me know. (I was fed up with spending all the time and wanted to close the deal).
Then salesman says "wait a minute". Five minutes later he's back with his boss who starts to do a monologue about the car (a generic monologue that would fit any car on any day, rain or shine). I let him finish and then I told them I already said I'd like to buy the car. But I need to have an inspection done to it and I need a very short test drive, I can even just sit in the passenger seat.
Long story short, the dealer didn't close the deal, but next afternoon left me several messages, inviting me for breakfast at a known coffee place as if that would suddenly bring me back to sit waste my time even more. They did offer a test drive this time around (per phone) and that we could go for inspection. I asked what happened with the doctor and they told me the doctor got an emergency call and couldn't come in. Not making this story any longer than it already is, I ended up with a different car from a different dealer that came up on my "shopping list" that Saturday.

While, many salesmen just lie, there is an insidious combination of ignorance and lack of curiosity that affects almost all of them.

Used car sales managers PURPOSEFULLY give their salesguys incomplete information...dealers, once they OWN the car really don't look too hard.... (and why should they? Nothing good will come from that)

All this means is that a salesman is simply useless in the purchase process-

I'll also opine that this is so common, I'd not waste my time posting it!

I'm with Engine Guy here. I know plenty of very smart people that typo crap all day on a keyboard. I'd still lose to them on Jeopardy though

I'm fortunate to know a great sales guy at the local p-car dealer but I've dealt with many morons in the past. I've seen idiots selling everything from cars to enterprise grade technology solutions though, they're everywhere!

I was only pointing out the irony in it, I had no delusions that anyone would be a fan of car salesmen haha
