Best of luck with your new vehicle. Hopefully you can be as successful in your new venture as you were in your last one. There is no arguing that you have done about as much as you can with the current car!

Kevin, detune that 996 TT, take some weight out and go kick some butt. You will have a new appreciation for what it can do (as in Cup Car not needed).

If not the 996 TT on the track, what do you have in mind? Keep us posted.

Mike, what does a 996 GT3 cup car run for these days? Are you afraid of the 50 hour lifetime of the engine before a rebuild is necessary? I guess one way to go would be to get a pair of matched engines...

Of note, I recently invested in an S2000 as a dedicated AutoX car. The 996TT was a bit of a beast to learn on and probably not ideally suited to an AutoX course. It's also heavy and grippy so I wanted to move to a car where it's easier to find the limit and modulate it once i get there. I also found that the lack of an LSD made it a bit difficult to control.

That said, I've retained my TT as a semi-daily driver.

I've seen freshened versions going for $60-80K. It boils down to what you want in a car. I had 3 track cars at my place until we sold the 996TT. We now have two, and I hope to have the spec Miata sold by next week.

The car in my avitar is the last of my track cars, and I'll probably keep it for ever. It's also closer to the rawness of a gt3 cupcar. We'll see how things shake out as spring closes...

Dez, I am not going to detune a cart that was built for a different goal. I would rather get a "sharper" track tool that has more adjustability designed in from the factory. My first choice would be a 997gt2 as their values are dropping faster than a politicians approval rating. I must admit I am a bit intrigued by the 997.2 Gt3 as well. Apparently they are a world different from the .1 gt3s in that they produce well over double the down force at speed. I have never been a NA guy but I am willing to try, besides they are mod proof!

I can understand that but would like to mention a couple of things.

#1 Someone lied to you. There are plenty of GT3's with 10's of thousands in suspension/LSD and aero mods. The temptation will get you. And to keep up with the high hp (and well driven) Vette's, Vipers, GTR's etc. you'll need that + insane driving skills to make up for the lack of HP

#2 If you are looking to save money from your current path, road racing is NOT the way to go, but it sure is fun!!!!

997 GT2 sounds awesome.

Well done indeed man... well done. You have had one helluva ride with the TT platform and shared everything too.

My vote? Go GT3:P

Kevin....as mentioned here road course is not cheap, and indeed the cost of the car is just the downpayment...think much more expenses over a longer life span of evolution and changes and adjustability as you grow with the car and the hobby and your experience level grows...are you planning on doing DE or actual racing? The former is much more reasonably cost effective as racing has unplanned costs all over the place. Trust me I had the engine rebuilt on my race car twice now...since 2004...and it's not a hr logged motor per se. The cost of racing and the time involved is one of the biggest factors of why I mainly instruct now.

If you are planning to do DE then as somebody mentioned de-tuning your current car and putting a safety cage or roll bar would be the most economical way...you already know that car well... and a turbo making 500 to say 600 hp on the circuit is more than adequate. If you really want to go on a roadcourse with a Porsche and don't want to use your current car, then (1) Cup car (2) GT3 RS and (3) GT3 in that order... the GT2 is an FI car and if you wanted that on track you could just as well use your turbo...

best of luck !

Amen to that.

He lives in Michigan too, that means likely trips to Road America. The GT3 will do well at Gingerman, Grattan and Waterford Hills most likely, but will be lunch on the straights at Road America.

Are you looking to drive this car on the street as well Kevin? Or dedicated track car?
