Battery and charger

I need to replace the battery in my 996 GT2...what battery should I put in there? Looking for specific model info and where to source it etc...Porsche I am assuming sells the same thing I can get at other places for less foregoing the name brand... what do you guys recommend?
Can I use an Optima battery like a red top? those worked for me on other cars but may not fit in the battery tray on the Porsche.

Also would like info on what charger and maintainer I can get for the car for over the winter... I've seen ads for cteck, battery tender etc... also looking for model numbers here as well. Looking to hook the car up to this over the winter, actually a 2 car model would be best so I can hook the GT2 and SL55 AMG both from the same battery maintainer...although not sure because the Porsche might be standard battery and the Mercedes may use an AGM battery...??

thanks

Charger: Battery Tender

Battery: Get whatever is applicable from Walmart, Advance, Autozone, Sears, Sam's Club or Costco. They are all made by Robinson Manufacturing and are rebadged by the seller. Price wise Sunir, they range from $126-156.

If you need help selecting one, or installing one...you know I'm game to lend you a hand. PM me.

Optima's are useless unless your running some monster stereo equipment or something that draws lots of amps/juice.

Thanks Val appreciate it... Mario and I were working on this the other day and thinking about a replacement ... What p/n do I give them at autozone or wherever? Or do o just tell them year make and model? I am also assuming i can bring in my existing battery to exchange it and they can check it against that for size and shape...

NP.

All you give them is the group## off the existing battery and this tells the seller (Autozone/Advance, ETC), what size the battery is and it corresponds w/the year/make/model of said vehicle. Bringing back the existing battery will get you back the core $$ as well.

I had the Odyessy PC925 in my Audi S4 and it worked great as long as I drove it at least once a week or so. Weight is around 26 lbs. ~10 lbs heavier than a PC680 but at bit more practical. I still have the PC925 and will be swapping it into the 996 in the spring.

Odyessy requires a very specific battery charger though (check their website for the recommended chargers). I'll be picking up a CTEK 7002, which is one of the ones that Odyessy reccomends. It's similar to the CTEK 3300 (which porsche rebrands as their battery charger) but has a specific charging program for dry-cell batteries.

+1 on PC925 buy it online anywhere. Make sure you get the + and - on the right side of the battery and that you get automotive plugs to put on top of it. As Dr. Jekyll says if you park the car for a couple of weeks it will lose charge, but even if fully dead it can be recharged with no problems - some other batteries die forever if they run dry once.

Plus 1 for the ctek. Had one for years works like a charm. I hard wired my bike with some of the connectors that come with it so I don't even remove it to maintain my bike battery over winter. And I leave it on solid for at least 5 months with no issues.
Also my bike was built in 2003 and still has the original battery in it. I think that says something about a good charger.

I was on the website smartercharger today I will give them a call and ask them about a unit to charge both vehicles and see what they say...the 3300 seems to be their most popular unit...

I dunno about PC925 is that like a standard Porsche battery or is it another type...I keep hearing about dry cell, AGM etc...? I don't drive the GT2 everyday sometimes it can sit for a week or two expecially in the winter. Oh and I also have a strut bar on the GT2 so the shape/size of the battery has to be stock proportions or smaller...wondering if I can get a smaller battery in size and weight and still have good voltage for the car, no crazy radio system so don't need a ton of juice...

The PC925 is A LOT smaller than stock and almost 30lbs lighter. Standard batteries have acid in them. When you trickle charge them they emit hydrogen gas which can cause an explosion if you don't open the hood and vent it before starting the car (do a search, it's happened to a few folks on here). Also, if you kill a standard battery it has to be replaced.

A dry cell battery, like the odyssey, doesn't emit hyrdogen when it's charged. It can also be recharged and still work after the battery was completely drained. Just make sure you get a charger that is recommended. Apparently the dry cells have to be charged a certain way and a typical battery charger doesn't do it properly.

Attach the factory vent hose to the battery. Keeps the fumes away. But I could see guys not hooking it up or have the vent hose missing causing a possible explosion. Plus the battery is right next to the cabin filter which leads directly into the cabin. Don't want those fumes in there either.

Did a google search and one of the sites I found:

http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc925series.htm

looks like it's around $180 - $200 for the PC925 ...which is a dry cell AGM type unit (are all dry cells AGM? or are all AGM batteries dry cell but not exlusively the other way around?) Looks like the auto terminals will be extra as well as the plastic strap to grab it and put in into the Porsche mounting location...my questions are will it fit in the limited space and tray and bracket mount our cars come with (996tt/GT2) ...plus keep in mind I have a strut bar there also which works with the factory battery just barely...wondering if that will fit with the PC925?? anyone know about any of this...thanks fellas

No SubstiTTute is infamous around these parts
Here is something I discovered.

Check out VW battery number 000-915-105-DH. I paid $99.75 at my local VW dealer. Has anyone else used this?

I have two Audi A4s that take that battery. ( Why pay Audi prices for the same battery?) I noticed that the VW battery measures the exact same size, and is rated the exact 380A and 12V80Ah as the genuine Porsche battery that my dealer installed in my 2002 996TT 4 years ago, which still works fine. The Porsche battery is part # 999.611.080.20 and they charged me $212 just for the battery. Next time I need a battery I will try the VW battery for $99.

The reason I went to the dealer is I installed an Autozone battery and it died after one day. I thought I may have had an electrical issue. Turns out the Autozone battery had 3 dead cells!

I use the Porsche battery maintainer every winter. It seems to be identical to the CTEK Multi US 3300 available at Amazon.

When I get a chance I can throw it in the car and take some pics to show you how it fits. Plus it will get me off my butt to finally get it in the car. Unfortunately I wont be around to do it for another week or so... damn holiday travels

But based on just looking at the two batteries, I don't see why fitment would be a problem. The OEM porsche battery is huge. The PC925 is significantly smaller in height, length and width.

PC925 has the same "depth" and the bottom "lip" of the battery fits right into the OEM tray. - this this is a standardized measurement. Best way to hold it in place is a very good strap that you wrap under the "tray" which is bolted to the body with 2 x 13mm I believe, alt with two long rods and a steel cross bar over the battery. Height is the same.

I have a PC925 and love it. Rennline sells a great mounting kit as well, Sunir.

I trickle charge it with an odyssey tender and don't ever worry about it.
