Climate control gone wild!

Hey guys, my 02 996tt started doing something funny last night/this morning. The climate control keeps resetting to "Lo" and turning the fans up to max. No matter what I do, it always goes back to Lo and cranks up the fan. Any ideas?

Any battery/charging issues? Low or high voltage may cause things to act strange.

Not to my knowledge. The reading on the volt meter inside reads normal and the car starts fine.

Try resetting everything by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes

You should try pulling it out disconnecting it and making sure all plugs are in tight. If you can't fix it, I can have the unit out asap. Pretty easy to swap out.

Yea. Just started doing it all of a sudden. What's worse is that it is winter here in NY...the last thing I need is A/C.

Yeah -- that doesn't look right given that it's not responding to most of your buttons, and it also changes the settings on its own while in manual mode. I've always found the climate control system to be a little odd (Why does the AC have to come on when I turn on recirculation? Why does the the fan and heat go to max when I turn on the defrost? etc.), but your situation looks much more strange. If it's like the radio -- resetting everything by disconnecting power sounds like a good first step.

Did you look at fuse E7, c7, D6. If you did and they are ok remove E7 and put it back in. Also press on the defrost button to see if it is not stuck in.... You seems to be always in defrost mode in some cases but the end of the video shows something really strange...

I'm willing to bet you that you have a bad resistor in your climate control system. The resistor is part number 99657392300. The resistor is positioned in the one of the air ducts and basically samples the flow of air. When it goes bad, you get what you are seeing. The whole system goes nuts, it could go full bore hot or cold, fan could go to max or not work at all. The resistor should be a bit under $300 at your local dealer. See the link below for the parts schematic. The resistor is #21

That resistor sounds like it could definitely be it. M3, I can't respond to your PM. PM me your e-mail.

Same thing happened when my ignition switch was going bad.

Keep us posted on what it was.
