Probably had bigger turbos and was smart enough to sell them and get some money back out of em.

I have never seen a 996 turbo with a 6-speed tiptronic...wonder what they did or if its a typo

http://www.europeancarweb.com/featur...o/viewall.html

On the rare occasion that my 13-year-old son invites me to play Need for Speed on his new Wii, I'm always given an automatic-lest I slow down the game trying to figure out how to shift. "It's easier," he says, fewer distractions for the slow old man. So when COO Paul Burkman casually (cautiously, gauging my reaction perhaps?) mentioned Performance Outfitters Group's (POG) current showpiece-a Porsche 996 Turbo nicknamed "Raven"-was equipped with a Tiptronic transmission, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of slow old men the Group caters to. I'm sure I mumbled something polite all the while thinking real men drive six-speeds while we packed up and headed out for some photos, then he asked if I would like to drive.

At first everything was fine. Just another 996T, or so I thought, waiting for the tuner hyperbole to start. "996Ts are a dime a dozen nowadays," Burkman says (at least in his wealthy corner of Connecticut) as we cruised sedately through town, "Though we wanted to build something unique, with a bit of flair but with a darker image, hence Raven." The light ahead turned red, we slowed to a stop, and I realized traffic ahead of us would have had a chance to clear. Having just been down this rolling bit of narrow divided highway running along a reservoir while cruising for photo locations, I knew the way ahead was clear with no side roads, so I checked the mirrors and tentatively planted my right foot when the light turned green.

The temptation to keep the pedal floored was undeniable and Raven's acceleration was unrelenting. Trees blurred as my eyes lifted, checking the road ahead as it rushed closer at extraordinary speeds. Our two lanes felt as narrow as a rock-walled Welsh Lane and I needed to breathe the throttle as the highway engineer's broad curves suddenly felt more like chicanes. Thank goodness for the Tiptronic for I surely would have forgotten to shift and scattered 3.6 parts all over the road had the transmission not had a mind of its own.

I tried mightily to avoid more antisocial right-foot led behaviors on the reverse run but when the white BMW flashed past as the light changed, I was compelled to give chase. Darker indeed, Raven's power leads one into a desperate spiraling descent into temptation (and hyperbole) ... plunging downhill toward the reservoir, it was interesting to feel the suspension work as it compressed under the car's weight, but the scraping sound as we crossed the expansion strip leading onto the bridge rudely brought me back to reality. Visions of a shattered carbon-fiber splitter rumored to cost more than my daily driver flooded my brain. The big monoblock Brembos quickly bled any excessive speed (I never did glance at the speedo) and, mortified, I handed over the keys and jumped back in the photo chase car (an M5 Raven made me feel like a gutless wonder) at the next light.

Looking for something fast and reliable, Burkman, who spent almost 18 years working for Porsche before forming POG, knew where to start. "Raven was my brainchild, but we're a group and everyone from the owners to the shop guys contributed lists with the best of their research as we tried to bring it up a notch," he says. The menacing 996TT was POG Principal Tim Grant's entry in the Great American Run, one of four cars POG prepped for the 2007 dash across the States (the winner was closest to the target average speed of 61 mph over the 3,000-mile checkpoint-style course.) Shop technicians went through the flat six, replacing the stock rods with Carrillos, despite plans for a major horsepower bump, leaving the stock pistons in the engine. A great deal of time and effort went into the intake and exhaust systems. The intake side features a V-Flow air induction system, a Bosch large bore throttle body with CNC-machined venturi adapters, modified Y pipe and the Clubsport intercooler upgrade complete with a custom Cryogenics sprayer set. The 44.5mm primary tube stainless headers lead to a Fabspeed exhaust. A set of hybrid Garrett GT750 high-flow ball bearing turbos-quick spooling KKK impellers mated to the big push of the Garrett compressor side-complete the systems.

But the techs didn't stop there. The transmission was pulled and massaged and huge Brembo monoblock calipers and rotors (six-piston 408mm up front, four-piston 380mm in back) were installed. Eibach adjustable antiroll bars and the KW V3 coilover suspension kit were next, lowering the rear 1 1/4 inches and the front 1 1/2 inches (the spoiler really wasn't my fault). Once the mechanicals were in place, PES' Tony Ricci developed the proprietary engine management system and handled engine-tuning duties. At 1.75 bar of boost, Raven's best dyno run peaked at 837.4 hp. In the interest of a reliable run from New York to Los Angeles the boost was dialed back to 1.3 bar, leaving the poor rig with only 700-plus horsepower. Despite which, on a recent dash up to Lime Rock, Conn., from POG's Stamford, Conn., shop, Burkman averaged 27.7 mpg, albeit with a "very, very light throttle."

Despite POG's reputation as a shop with a certain amount of discretion, all go and no show, it is hardly acceptable for a shop showpiece. PES also supplied its forged aluminum, CNC-machined G5 wheels powdercoated black to match the body, now dressed a TechArt GTS body kit. The monotone color scheme is broken only by the striking yellow headlight covers, and on the inside the GT3 race seats sport subtle yellow stitching, as do the custom gauge panels.

Tunes are a necessity on a cross-country trip; Mike Belanger of POG's Custom Automotive Radar and Sound division (CARS) designed the audio system. Simple by CARS standards, the 10-inch Morel sub molded into the right-side-center console footwell and dash mounted Morel three ways (6-inch, 4-inch, and 1-inch) are driven by two amps totaling 1,000 watts hidden under the Cryogenics CO2 bottles. If the W205 Alpine head unit's (touch screen, nav, MP3, satellite) equalizer can't deliver just the right sound, no worries-each speaker can be individually adjusted.

Though personally I think the Raven more resembles a dark jungle cat complete with glowing yellow eyes, poised powerful, and ready to pounce on the unwary more than the most intelligent and ominous of birds, I certainly wouldn't mind hearing a certain rapping, tapping at my garage door.

That is the dealership that I bought my car from. The car I bought from them was one that caught my eye when I first started looking. And for various reasons I did not buy it and I rocked the boat quite a bit fishing for info on the car. Several months later I struck a deal and I will say they have been very good to deal with... Well I will caveat that and say several of the salesmen were typical salesman terds but Parin the owner and Phil his partner were both very friendly and accommodating.

I stand corrected. I didn't see it listed on ebay and assumed it was the same. If I'm not mistaken this time The black raven was owned by craig, a member of 6speed.

Car looks nice but it doesn't make sense to me. Why all that engine work inside the motor but not of the supporting mods? Fuel, tuning?
