PSM on or off? How do you drive your 996tt?

For a few months I've been driving my car with PSM on all the time and I have to say the straight line acceleration seemed to be really badly affected by the PSM cutting the power down. I started to think that the power in this car is not really usable as it seems to be sliding and slipping most of the time in lower gears.

Now that I have tried driving with PSM off I have to say it feels waaaaay better.

I do get some wheel slip when I floor it in 2nd gear but once it gets traction or if the front gets more % of power, wow that pulls. I feel it is actually more fluent that way, even with some wheel spin, does not get as jerky as with the PSM on.

Now I need to work on cornering without PSM and I will be all set but I have to admit it seems to be quite OK to control even with PSM off, of course without getting to close to the limits

Do you leave your PSM on or off most of the time?

There is a PSM charge pump by the ABS unit in the bootlid. Unplug it and buh bye PSM.

I like PSM for some driving conditions. There are some reactions it can do much quicker than humanly possible.

As an aside, just about every road test done on the 996TT confirms it is faster with PSM on - certainly not as fun though.

I pulled the PSM fuse after my first canyon run. The interventions while trail braking are far too disruptive, and prevent me from rotating the car as I want to.

I'm about 2.5 seconds faster with psm off on a track and about 1 second faster on autocross with it off. I would say it depends on driving style and experience with in terms of what works for you to go faster.

I've heard consistent things as F1 stated....most of our autocross instructors will tell us to learn without PSM as once you get a feel for the car, you will be better off without it. However, on the track, most will tell you to leave it on until you get a really good handle of the car before turning it off (which is the ultimate state it should be in).

Maybe you haven't driven the car hard enough Alex; must be too busy with the **** and monkey businesses. I decided to turn mine off after my track day... it was almost like scary when the PSM kept interrupting.

Interesting. I guess in Autocross that would make sense due to the number of slower speed turns. I'm surprised on a road course though. Have you tried in the wet?

Check out some of the road test videos on the 996tt. I can't recall any where the tester stated it was faster with PSM off. They all concluded it was more fun off, but lap times, skid pad, slalom were all faster in both wet and dry with PSM on.

I think I have watched that vid too Nikolas; I was actually surprised by the results. Like some said... if I get a dollar for believing everything that I read or watched on internet, I would be a multi-millionaire by now. You really have to experience it yourself to make the call.
