Can I get by with stock clutch after turbo upgrade?
I've read all the reports that a clutch is needed for most turbo upgrades including 16G- my car has a newer stock clutch thanks to previous owner and would be interested in more power on a road course not street. So some 2nd, and mainly 3rd & 4th gears.
My question is could the stock clutch hold up with a 16G/billet/18G mild setup if I keep it to 5bar, exhaust, retune (91oct)?

AMS said that a stock clutch would work just fine with there k16 billets and a 93 tune no problem but with the optional fuel kit not for long if you do big pulls.
I'm personally skeptical but you can read about it in the sponsors section if you search billet k16.
I'm in the same boat as you. I want the billets but not the extra cost of a new clutch so I've always held back. But I never track my car, it might be harder on it on the track.

HI,I think and know from my levels that it will not hold...The seller of those Turbos can and will say that so you will not back out of going to their next level,,Then when you do them and get the power they are suppose to produce, its like this> you are in it already and you need the clutch,,And they Hope you will buy it from them...Just sharing what I have seen....
I can also tell you that even with a K24 with a good flash and a good exhaust it might not slip on full throttle roll ons But if you come out of the hole hard and or power shift at full throttle 1 to 2 you will most likely slip...Been there ,done that......Hope this helps..

no way in hell. I have billets with all supporting mods and if i had a stock clutch it would have given out on the first dyno pull. Do yourself a favor and get a clutch upgrade or dont do anything at all, and for reference there are plenty of guys that had to upgrade their clutches just with a flash.
Thanks guys- you've answered the question.
So for now I'll stay with K16 and just get a better exhaust until time clutch goes south then power-up. Unless someone can tell me a 16G with proper tune is still safe.

I have a Sachs stage 1 stock replacement. I have no slippage whatsoever. I believe that's driving style and mileage plays into factor with this. If ya launch hard alot it will wear fast! But with hwy rolls it'll last longer.
Mark,
Why do you want all that power ? That 3-4k investment can go to way better use for your track driving. You don't need 16/18g power to go fast at the track. Before the final design of my splitter i was deep into the 1:55's at Thunderhill. I know that you care about lap times; concentrate on suspension bits. I'm going to see if i can go to Thill on the 7th of april to see how much my lap times have improved with revised splitter and exhaust. i'm sure I will be in deep 1:53's with just 500 hp car.... As a reference I'm 5 seconds faster than a gt2 with a pro driver when it was tested... My goal is 152's at thill and 1:33's at Laguna seca.

I'm hoping to keep my stock clutch for a while longer with flash + exhaust, but I baby the car much more than most. It's been fine for me with just a flash on K16s but I'm about to install an exhaust too. I bet I can milk it along for a while unless the clutch is really on the edge already (which I doubt).
