upgrading to 996 cup car shifter cables

Has anyone upgraded their stock shifter cables to the 996 cup car cables? What pros and cons did you notice.
BTW, I did a search and read about gt3 guys doing this but wanted to see what the 996tt guys have to say about it.

TIA

Some people have and I hear they love it. I think Mike Kelly did for his 997SSK. Look on Rennlist or Renntrack. He rarely comes here. He sold his 996TT but still lurks around.

If you're going to get the cup cables get the GT3 shifter not the 997 short shifter.

I've already got the 997SSK already. Is this a terrible match with the cup cables?

Try and drive a car with them first before you decide to upgrade. I was considering this before I drove a car with the cup cables. They make the shifting heavier IMO, and I decided against buying them. I also prefer the stock clutch with hydraulic assist compared to the GT2 conversion too. It really comes down to personal preference, that's why I say try before you buy.

The cup cables are designed for a beefier shifter. Look at the pictures on the 997SS and the GT3RS shifters on Suncoast webside. Most of the parts inside the 997SS shifter are plastic which is just fine with the stock cable. The GT3RS shifter has metal parts in high stress locations designed to work with the more robust cup cables. With that said, unless you're tracking the car I don't think you need the cup cables or GT3RS shifter. You'll be just fine the 997SS.

996 Cup shifter box and cables. You will never look back.
The throw is not short, but is as precise as it can be.

Cup cables wont fit

How are the guys that are trying to connect the Cup cables to a non-Cup shifter base doing this? The OE 996/997/GT3 shifters use a plastic cable connection that is not compatible with the cup car's steel ball end cables.

Are there parts to convert the plastic shifter base to steel ball pivots? OR are those that have the non-cup shifters going to convert to the Cup shifter base?

Broken shifter cup

That sounds very interesting! I have broken shifter cups before and its no fun when you cant grab a gear to go home. I recently changed my clutch and noticed alot of the cable connections were very sketchy. My car has 100k and that sounds like a nice reliable upgrade. Thanks ! It time to do some digging

do the whole shift assembly. Lose the plastic ball joint and upgrade to the RS assembly.
