This is not an if, but when. My local shop had two Turbos in this week that had the job done. One of which while putting along on the highway at 60 mph and dumped coolant everywhere. The other was a race car (nearly stock) and some other shop had done the main ones at the housing, and he decided to get the others done.

Needless to say, they are going to do mine next month. I personally would not have it welded unless it was someone I trusted completely, and Goldcrest Motorsports fits in that category for me. So I'm having mine welded and will not think about it again.

Glad you got it fixed Jon. I'll be at Mid-Ohio sometime in the near future (August and then again in September likely). The dealer actually did the pinning for you??

My driving buddy and I are contemplating the August 17-19 MORPCA DE. There is also a club race that weekend. That tends to make the DE's less fun, but I'm traveling in September and October, so that may be my last shot at it for the year. Maybe we'll finally meet!

I had the pinning done by my independent mechanic, Rick Karch. He's worked on my cars for years. He's the same one who installed the UMW turbos, clutch and flywheel a couple of years ago. Zero issues with that. He's a friend as well. Wouldn't think about going elsewhere.

I went to the dealership here in Montreal (Laval) called Lauzon Porsche for parts. While waiting I ask if it was possible to talk to the shop manager. My question to him was , what do you do in a case of coolant lost due to the sleeve popping out? He look at me like if I was from another planet, and his answer was "this is blown out of proportion and I think it is a internet urban legend" and he left.... I am sorry for the people that own a Porsche and get it fix at this dealership or any in Montreal.....

Wow! And I guess that if you showed him this photo from Frank Dorn

he'd tell you that it was a PhotoShop trick, right?

Jon,
About how many hours do they charge for the job (without the extra blown hose)?

Not sure yet. I've been pestering Rick for the bill, but he's busy with some other projects right now. We've been working together a long time, so sometimes he can be a little casual about the billing.

Jon, I told him I took picture of my own engine with the pipes leaking and completely loose in the recess and he simply turn his back and went to his office. But I have to admit that I had dirty working clothes and had a three days unshaved bear

Pin

I have had my car with a gt700 kit for over five years and go to the track all the time. I have never heard of this before or had any problems. That being said my motor is coming out on thursday for a clutch. Should I do this? Is it necessary?

If you search, you will find lots of cases of blown out coolant hoses. It is sufficiently prevalent, and dangerous, that OVR-PCA is requiring all cars with GT1 engines to either have the joints pinned or welded, or to run water instead of antifreeze as coolant, for their DE events.

Since your motor is going to be out anyway, this would be the ideal time to do it.

I blew a coolant hose the other day. My 03 has lots of miles but purchased less than 60 days ago it blew while I was driving. Huge mess on the ground, shot through some of the openings near the engine and covered the rear bumper and total engine bay in coolant. Was the cheapest repair yet but no fun. Had to get it flatbedded

If you pulled the water pump, wouldn't it have been best to weld instead of pin?

I decided to pin, rather than weld, because aluminum is not such an easy material to weld. So unless you can find someone who is very good at it, the welding could lead to corrosion and pinhole leaks in the heat affected zone near the weld. There are some examples of this starting to show up on some cars. OTOH, if you are or have a good welder, that is probably the best solution. Since I don't know anyone nearby who is good at it, and all of the joints in my parts were still nice and tight, I decided to go with pinning.

I just finished a track weekend at Mid-Ohio, and the car performed flawlessly.

Mine popped out behind the alternator and I ended up replacing the alt. too at the same time. It's an age thing not a mileage thing... my car had 50K miles but a friend of mine had it happen at only 25K miles. Car is the same age. I ordered the bung kit and had all 8 welded in.

Mine let go on the back straight at Streets of Willow earlier this month. It was the one behind the alternator. Had it re epoxyd and pinned. Indy shop told me they have a newer epoxy from Porsche which supposedly stands up to age and heat/cool cycles better. Found the water pump to be leaking so that had to be replaced at the same time. One month earlier had to replace both front radiators. Two months earlier had to replace two hoses. Hope I'm done with cooling issues now. My car is a 2003 with 61k miles.

Is it possible for you to found out about this new epoxy? That would be a great discovery for many of us....Thanks!
