Mod advice - Best options

Hi guys

I want to do the Intake kit and the ECU on my 04 996TTc.

I have read all the posts and forum battles/discussion abot which are the best options but cannot come up with a clear winner/winners.

I need advice on which way to go with this BUT the following has to be considered... I am in South Africa, we do not necessarily get dealers for some of the brands that you guys have access to, those that are available in SA are quite expensive (I was recently quoted $2100 for the EVOMS intake kit) - the markups are around 100% on the toys for the 996 as everyone assumes that if your drive one, you must be loaded.(they sell for +- $100k used in SA).

Please let me know what the best options or combinations are and I will see if I can get them in SA.

Thanks

I would skip the intake, and save your money towards e.g. exhaust or suspension upgrades, they bring more benefits.

For the ECU flash, you can get a flash cable from all the sponsors e.g. EPL, FVD, 911tuning, Protomotive etc etc etc. You can flash the ECU easily yourself, so no problems.

Thanks for your help guys. These xflow exhausts that I have been seeing look interesting. Regarding the flash, my engineers suggest dura metric/ softronic( they're the same thing apparently). Are there any other suggestions?

+1 spend the money on the exhaust rather than the intake. The ECU flash is the best bang for the buck. Get one that you can do yourself through the OBD2 port. Some of the tuners on the board can send the flash in a zip file via email and you should be able to avoid the SA markup. As far as exhuast go, since Europipe is used to shipping off shore they may be the most appropriate. If you don't have emissions inspection you can go without cats (saving a bunch of money) and have the flash tuned to work without the cats. A good muffler shop in SA could bend up something nice for you much cheaper than buying something imported.

Softronic is very easy to install (they send back both your stock file and tuned file via internet) and they include a Durametric cable, but they are not the same company. So you get a two for one, a flash and then just download the Durametric proggy for free that will work with the cable.

Wow Guys, thanks a heap for all the advice. its amaziing how people experience is so different re: mods. So the way i see it now, the way to go is, Softronic flash, a decent exhaust ( xflow or not? benefits anyone? are there any stats to show how they perform over a standard?) and a high flow filter K&N or such in the std airbox?

Skip the filter also. Stock is better. You really only need to get the flash first. Get used to it, then the exhaust. Very simple mods that make a huge difference. The SSK as mentioned above is also a great mod. Those are the mods I have done so far and the car is wonderful and reliable! The only other change I am doing is coilovers this summer, then I am done.

Hey,Any exhaust should be better then the stock one,unmodified...X-pipes do work very good but I still do not uderstand the concept ,of how with both banks of gas streams hitting in the center??...Plus they sound great..
I have run a K+N filter on this car from day one..No problem with mafs..But I did do a slight rinse of the oil off of it and when I reoiled it ,I do oil ever so lightly....Didnt feel any power gain though..But I have been TOLD by a few builders they are worth 2-3 HP??...I am a K+N fan ,as they are always on my vehicles....Good Luck

Just do EVERYTHING possible, this car will reward you !!

I would do at once exhaust, clutch+gt2 conv, flash, DVs, SSK

after, depends on how and where you drive the car, might do also suspension works, brakes, rwd.

Hi Guys
just an update,
I have done the software - getting 1.2 bar peaks and 1.0 bars boost... the car felt really strong after this. we logged the car before the change and we were getting 310gm/sec airflow and after we were getting 326gm/sec. the peak went up but the interesting change was that it went up to the peak much earlier in the rev range and held the higher peak from earlier.

Yesterday i sent the car in to De-cat the exhaust. turns out that the car is fitted with a europipe 3" system with HUGE cats. So we took those off on the presumption that the cats were blocked given that we suspect that the car came with this setup from the factory and is 7 years old.

The feel of the car has changed considerably. it feels stronger and more urgent (thats what she said!!) and sounds MAGNIFICENT. its not that loud but as it gets above 4000rpm it screams like only a Porsche does. You can also hear the turbos spooling up at low rpm and some other noises that i havent heard before and have yet to identify.

I am hoping to log the airflow later today to see what difference it made to the power peaks and to the power delivery.

My new airfilter is on its way from AFE - its a non oiled reusable filter and should be here in the next 2 weeks...that should also change the sound of the car...

What I do need to check with these changes is the functioning of the DVs... if anybody has any ideas on how to check them, please let me know.

I also need a new oil pressure sensor as mine keeps throwing a "failure warning "light and the oil pressure guage drops to zero and then jumps to five AND i need to check the vacuum on the brake assist as per my other post which got very little response!!

Thanks for all your help and advice guys...
