1st gear is gone

Anyone know of a good tranny rebuilder in Atlanta area? It's for a 02 TT.

One stop would be preferred, but hey, whatever works at this point.

That sucks, man

Okay, 1st gears don't just fail. What happened? Driving style? Not trying to say you caused it. Just curious of the circumstances? Was the old shifter setup causing missed shifts? Were you doing 1/4 mile runs? Or missed shift?

Welp, here are the symptoms. Going from neutral to first: press the clutch, put it in first, release the clutch, grinds big time. The workaround is: put it in second, then for to first, now everything is fine. I described the problem and dropped it off. At first they thought it was the first gear synchro clip, then I get a call saying first is gone. If that's the case, would I've been able to drive normal? As long as I go from second to first, no issues and nothing feels different. Oh, it also doesn't pop out of first.

My buddy who I got the car from said the grind started when he put the aftermarket short shifter in. So I changed it out with a 997 shifter. 997 shifter felt much better but the 1st gear grind is still there. I don't have the original so cannot compare to see if the shifter is the problem. No miss shifts or drag strip. Car hasn't been driven very hard.

if grind started after an aftermarket shifter. that means he did not properly mark teh shifter cables when isntalling that ALSO means you probably installed them the same way when changing to 997 shifter (incorrectly). you might not be fully in 1st gear - thats why its grinding or that could have cause a failure in the trans itself.

This is true. But the 997 shifter was installed with the tool in place. With the tool, you just lay the cables down while the shifter is aligned in a neutral position.
