AUTO-RX Engine Cleaner

Anyone used this stuff? If so, what were your results?

I have heard a lot of good things about it and it has some nice write-ups on other auto sites. Not sure it's necessary on our cars as well as we generally take care of them, but I was considering it for my Avalanche as it is getting up in mileage.

Try this instead, it has been around for years with great documented success. Even the US military uses the stuff in there planes and other vehicles; they have tested the stuff and have continued to use it for years.

I have used it for years myself and have found it to be a good product.

If your car or truck is not experiencing any problems, I would not use these products. I used it on my father's S420 in hopes to free a stuck lifter. I believe it is some sort of kerosene mixture and it dilutes the oil allowing it to clean out the engine. I would not leave it in there for a long time or drive the car hard if you added it to your oil. Esp with all this talk about IMS bearing issues and oil weights, you don't want to chance a well working engine with some $10 snake oil.

You could also use Seafoam, however, I have never used it in my oil but many do. If using in your oil, I would probably use it just before an oil change, for a day or two (30-40 miles).

I have used it directly in the fuel tank much like other use Chevron Techron, just to keep the fuel system clean.

Others suck it directly into the engine via the fuel pressure line (or a vacuum line) to help remove carbon build up, car smokes like crazy.

A google search for Seafoam should give you lot's of info. Can get at Pep Boys these days.

I believe the oil lines were gunked up since it made a lot of noise due to lack of lubrication where the lifters were. So I diluted the oil with different additives, drove it like I stole it for about a month, changed the oil to a 20w50 and voila! Something got fixed and it was quiet again. Saved my father in law $1200. Not the correct way of fixing things, but I had nothing to lose.

I have used Auro-Rx on a sludged Saab turbo, worked very well. It is very mild cleaner (is a mixture of lanolin and ester compounds) Developed to clean up the gunk on printing presses. Additionally, we have used it in CNC machine tool gearboxes. Again need to follow the directions and I recommend non-synthetic oil on the clean/rinse phase. The other products mentioned are more harsh and may dislodge chunks of sludge that may reduce oil flow by blocking the oil filter media more than Auto-Rx. I reccomend you also visit the BITOG website and use the search tool.

Tanks Boss! I was hoping someone with first hand knowledge of this actual product would chime in. I checked out BITOG, but I guess you have to register to use the search function.

I have used Seafoam in the past on another car I own...I got on board because many on message boards proclaimed great results. In the end I feel that there were marginal improvements - but it is not worth the time/effort unless you are having a defined problem. If you use synthetic oil and are up to date on maintenance - prolly not worth it.
I used 1/2 can in my oil and sucked 1/2 can thru my vacuum line. Ran it in my oil for maybe a day or so (it does thin your oil) - then drain, replace oil - run for a few more days and replace oil again with synthetic. Then replace spark plugs as the ones in there when Seafoaming will be fouled. Also may be some truth that this process accelerates degradation of gaskets - not sure though.
