Tech Info On Intercoolers
Tech Info On Intercoolers
I had a knowledgeable tuner swear to me that there was no difference between intercoolers on a regular turbo and GT 2...
He went further to break down the capacity of each and showed me a side by side comparison.
Is the only difference the part number??
If so can anyone recommend someone who makes custom intercoolers?
Thanks

I believe the claim is that the GT2 has 10% larger intercoolers, but who knows. It is a shame that we can't do a FMIC (front mount intercooler) setup to really maximize the air flow. I do not believe that the rear "openings" flow enough air to maximize the use of the intercoolers, but who knows.
I would like to see some flow rates before I say that for sure, though.

Ruiner, intersting what you said about the side slots. Not alot of people explore that avenue.
The X50/GT2 intercoolers are different and they are larger with fins that stick out instead of being smooth.
For custom intercoolers, you can ask S-Car-Go racing or the Speed Gallery to make a custom set for you. You can ask CJV or Craig about what they had done.

The x50/GT2 intercoolers are slightly different, and slightly larger, than turbo intercoolers. See e.g., http://www3.us.porsche.com/english/u.../leistung.htm.
This is a photo of a x50/GT2 intercooler:
This is a photo of Speed Gallery's modified intercoolers -- SG modifies the end tanks to remove air flow restrictions:

$$??
Just checked the S-CAR-GO site and they don't appear to be on there.
Do you know how much it costs for the intercoolers and carbon fiber intakes?
Is it recommended to do the injectors at the same time??
Thanks again

RS Tuning Intercoolers
Here a partial picture of RS Tuning's Intercolers.
On mildly tuned 996tt's HP gains of around 20HP were seen. On vehicles with a higher level of tuning (big turbos, etc) gains around 50 HP were realized.
They are using a super efficient core that is used in the aviation/aerospace industry!!!! (im quoting from the web site)
Up to 22 degree centigrade drop in inlet temp.

Think about it this way: Would you rather have two small radiators that get medium air flow in order to cool your engine or would you rather have one large radiator that has heavy air flow to cool your engine?
The choice is easy. The idea is to figure out how to maximize the air flow over the intercoolers in a 911 turbo. Once you do that, you can then experiment with intecooler sizes and depths.
Here is something to think about: Is that air that flows through the side "openings" greater than or equal to the air that flows into the oil coolers via the ducts in the front bumper? My initial thoughts would lead me to say no, but I cannot be sure until I see actual flow tests. Of course, we can't run intercooler piping all the way to the front, but you get the idea of how limited our cars might be in terms of intercooler efficiency.

Basically, the more air (the cooler the better) that you can flow over the intercooler at a fast rate (the front bumper of the car having a huge opening for that air to pass through), the cooler (and thus more heavily packed with Oxygen) the charge that enters into the engine via the intake plenum. Cooler air has more oxygen = more horsepower. Your efficiency goes up and the turbos are maximized. Of course, as your intercooler size goes up, so does turbo lag (to an extent). It is a give and take, really.

i have seen gemballa and other tuners putting the ic on the rear decklid of the cars but i thikn kpv has had problems with it, they are showing air flow drops.. or pressure drops.. jsut cant remember what thread it was...
