Dead auto-dimming rearview mirror
Dead auto-dimming rearview mirror
So, two years after replacing the $550 auto-dim mirror that broke from the mount (according to the dealer the whole thing needed to be replaced because the mirror comes complete with the mount), now the new mirror is broken inside.
The LCD went bad, and I'm afraid it will start leaking.
I did see there are some companies that can fix the mirror, but I didn't find any feedback and also the company doesn't have a phone number to call.
The cheapest OEM mirror I found was from Suncoast for $477 shipped.
Did anyone completely got rid of the electronic mirror and installed a regular mirror, no auto dim no nothing? Is it complicated to do? What do I do with the wiring that goes to the mount if I can install a regular mirror?

Thanks, can you please explain how did you take the mirror off? Is it complicated?
How long did it take to repair and get it back?
As far as I know the mirror itself does not come off the ball mount and needs to be taken off completely including the mount.

i can't help you with removal of the mirror but on my lambo, it was twisting the stem 45 degrees to unlock the mirror from the nut mounted to the windshield. you have to disconnect the power harness first obviously.
i had my mirror repaired for about $90. best repair for the money IMO. if you use a manual mirror, the harness just gets taped up and tucked into the headliner.
cover up your dash until you get the mirror off. it will leak and eat your interior.

I used radar-mirror.com and they did a great job.
Figuring out how to get the sucker off was the hard part. You have to remove the LED cover on the bottom and that's about as much as I remember. I know I found a lot of DIY's on how, but they were all wrong or for some other mirror type...

If you have the optional auto dimming mirror, DO NOT try to remove it by turning the base as you will destroy the mirror and the windshield both of which will set you back about $2K. To remove the auto dimming mirror you need to remove the two plastic half shell covers, carefully disconnect the electrical connector and then slide the mirror down out of it's mounting clip towards the dash right along the windshield. Be very careful to put even pressure on the mirror base as you slide the mirror out of its windshield mount so that you don't break the mirror mount. Wedging a flat screw driver on each side of the mirror clip and gently prying with it will help to get the mirror to start sliding out of its windshield mounting clip. It's actually very easy once you see how it's attached and takes only a couple of minutes.
